MISS STONE THOUGHT
TO BE ALIVE AND SAFE
So Writes a Correspondent
From Sofia.
DICKINSON INTERVIEWED
Hu Says 11a lias Positive Proof That
Some of the Members of the Macedo
nian Committee Were In Conspiracy
to Kidnap Missionary.
New York, Oct. 25.—The fact that
the brigands who kidnaped Miss Stone
have permitted communication to be es
tablished is taken to mean that Miss
Stone is still alive and safe from harm
at present at least, says the Sofia, Bul
garia, correspondent of The World. 0.
M. Dickinson, the diplomatic agent or
envoy of the United States In Bulgaria,
as well ns consul general at Constan-
tinople, in on interview, saye#
••I still think that the Bulgarian gov-
through it on the brigands to release
their captives. Some members of the
committee were arrested by the Bn**®'
rian government, but they were released
in a iew days. .
••It Prince Ferdinand's (Bulgarian)
government relaxes its pressure on the
committee nothing will bo left but to
pay the ransom in order to secure the
safety of Mi«« Stone and her compan
ion, Mrs. Tsilka, and then not endanger
the livos of the American missionaries
in the country or traveling through it.
‘•I havo absolute proof of the con
spiracy in the crime of some of the
members of the Macedonian committee.
Tho brigands who attacked Miss istonc s
party were disguised in Turkish fez ami
cloak. But two of them threw back
their cloaks during the attack, thus re
vealing tho uniform of the Macedonian
committee. They were recognized, too,
as Bulgarians. Moreover, they sposo
poor Turkish but good Bulgarian and
ate ham and bacon.
“The leading members of tho Bulgarian
government believe that tho brigands
are willing to surrender to the Bul
garian troops and in that case there
would be no danger to toe captives, but
if they should be captured by iurlnsh
troops the brigands would fight to the
last and then kill the captives, lbo
Turkish troops are under orders not to
attack the brigands, oven if they are
firodupou.”
