STILLADVANCING.
jt Costs More to Live Now Than for

A pVANCE IN ALL PRODUCTS.
jj ea t, Corn, In fact, Everything’Con
sumed Upon the Table Costa More
Than Heretofore and Indications
Point to Higher Prices Still.
Anyone who expeots to enjoy three
meals per day during the next twelve
months is confronted with the prob
leo of paying more for the|good things
oilife than ever before. For prioes
bare gone balooning, and the value of
everything consumed upon the table
is much higher than heretofore.
Hams, lard, bacon, meal, butter—
everything has gone sky rooketing.
This advanoe in produots of all kinds
concerns farmers as well as town peo
ple, especially those who will be foro-
ed to buy the greater part of tbeir-sup-
plies of oorn and stook feed during
another year.
The present price of corn at whole
sale is 99 to 93 cents per bushel, which
pntsmea! at a dollar. High prioed
corn means high priced meat. Balk is
selling in Americas now at 10 cents,
but dealers prediot very mnoh higher
prices after the holidays. Thinner
slices and fewer of them mast be the
rule.
Everything prioed in the family gro
cery store now has wings on it.
The sucoulent cranberry, for in
stance, sells at 20 cents per quart in
Americas. Bat the Christmas turkey
meet have this embellishment, despite
the high price.
The cost of providing Jsomething to
eat ie considerably more than iB usual
at this time of year, and the fact re
mains that the average man is in no
position to inorease his allowance for
home expenses,

FOUGHT FLAMES IN A FREEZE
Pattern House at Seaboard Shone Is
Burned.
What is known as the pattern house
it the Seaboard Railway shops caught
Sre last night and, being a small frame
building constructed of light material,
burned rapidly and was very nearly
consumed.
The fire department went speedily to
the scene and did good work.
The hose had to be dragged some
distance and across a dozen railroad
tracks in order to reach the house, but
despite this daisy the firemen soon got
a stream going and aaved mnoh valua
ble property.
It was bitter cold, and the wet oloth-
ing of the firemen was frozen as stiff as
boards even while the fought fire at
close range. , v \
The pattern house, containing valu
able patterns whioh was eared, was
•oath of the main shops and to wind
ward. Had it been on the north side
the conflagration might hare proved a
costly one.
Chief Monahan thinks $150 or $200
will cover the loss last night.

Retained further, that these resolu
tions be incorporated in the general
presentments of this body, that a page
of our minutes be inscribed to his mem
ory, and a eopy be furnished his be
reaved family in this hour of sadness.
Adopted by us this the 9th day of De
cember 1901.
In our deliberation touching the pen
sion list, we find the name of Mrs.
James Clements (a former pensioner)
stricken from the list. We deem iier
application a worthy one, and recom
mend, as heretofore recommended, that
her name be immediately restored to
the approved list for pensions.
In the interest of the tax payers of
Sumter County and for the purpose of
economy in the administration of the
law, we recommend that all the off!
cials of our county be employed on i
salaried basis, and further urge the
passage of some Legislative act to the
accomplishment of that end.
Whebias, We are informed there
exists at present, no place in each
militia district for holding court, or
elections, we recommend that the
County Commissioner, provide ade
quate buildings for that purpose, and
we approve the payment of Jurora and
Bailiffs $2.00 per diem each, and of rid
ing baliffs $4.00 per diem eacli for their
services as at present.
Consultation on our part witli some
of the County Commissioners constrain
us to report the county in excellent
condition generally speaking, and its
affairs as admirably administered in
every respect.
We feel assured of the full determi
nation on tiie part of our Commission
ers to provide for the citizens of Sum
ter county every needed utility and
public convenience consistent witli the
means at their disposal, and their well
defined views of practical economy in
the administration of their official af
fairs, and we congratulate the citizens
of Sumter county in the election of a
board of County Commissioners whose
official acts, so distinctly manifest a
wise and conscientious discharge of
i.ntainbd IS SUMTER juty on the part of each and every one
of its members. And in conclusion it
becomes our esteemed privilege, and
our pleasant duty as well, to express to
his Honor Judge K. A. Littlejohn our
sense of gratitude, and appreciation for
liis dignified, able and impartial ad
ministration of the law during our term
of service. And we further extend
thanks to our capable and obliging
Solicitor General, F. A. Ilooper, for the
wisdom of his counsel and kindly advice (
all of which is respectfully submitted.
R. S. OLIVER, Foreman.
GEO D. WHEATLEY, Clerk.
We further recommend the publica
tion of these presentments in the
