Chattanooga, Tenn., Jan. 2.—A hun
dred families living In the flats and
lowlands around Chattanooga camp
ed on the knolls last night as a result
of high water.
The river reached Its highest point
of 41 feet at 6 o'clock last night and
remained at a standstill until 8 o'clock
today. By noon It had only fallen 2
Inches. A-curious fact is that when
the river quit rising the hack water
continued to go up for nearly 2 feet.
The belt railroad and both street car
lines are cut off from all suburbs ex
cept by transfers and many houses
are submerged.
