CONGRESS SHOCKED
BY BRIBERY CHARES
<s> Lb* %
House In State of Great Ex-
citment.
RICHARDSON’S CLEVER COUP
He Dc tranks investigation of the Al
leged Charge That Improper Influ
encec Were Brought to Bear In Ad-
Danish Islands Purchase.
An Excellent Combination.
VCC3C
Wabh nutou. March 28.—Investiga
tion into the charge that certain mem
bers of the house and senate and oth
er men in high places may have been
influenc, .1 by improper considerations
in advocacy of the purchase of the
Danish West Indies will be had as the
result of a clever coup engineered by
Democratic leader Richardson in the
bouse yesterday.
For an hour or more the house was
thrown into a state of great excitement
as the result of the democratic de
mand for investigation of certain
charges made by Captain Christmas,
who had some sort of connection with
the Danish government in the early
negotiations over these islands.
There are suggestions of improper
influence used upon some members of
congress, though it is fair to say that
tfcefe allegations are very general in
their character. The particular point
made by the Democrats is that the
state department was in possession of
knowledge of these Christmas charges
when the purchase treaty was before
the senate, an . the members of that
body were not informed of these
charges tending to throw suggestions
of taint upon the negotiations.
In the secret report of Captain Wal
ter Christmas to the Danish govern
mer.t he declared that he had employ
ed corrupt means to bring the negotia
tions for the sale of the islands to a
consummation. The report, extracts
from which Mr. Richardson read, men
tioned the names of Abner McKinley
and his partner. Colonel Brown, C. W.
Knox, who was described as “an inti
mate friend of Senator Hanna;” Rich
ard P. Evans, who was said to repre
sent “Mr. Gardner and his friends in
the he.ise," anu two press associations,
the names of which were not given, as
having been interested in the matter.
Upon the basis of this report Mr.
Richardson asked the adoption of a
resolution for the appointment of an
Investigating committee of seven,
which was done.
Great excitement prevailed during
the proceedings.
The pleasant method and beneficial
effects of Hie well known remedy,
SrstT ok Figs, manufactured by the
California. Fig Stbup Co., illustrate
the valueof obtaining the liquid laxa
tive principles of plants known to be
medicinally laxative and presenting
them in the f«> rrn most refreshing to the
taste and acceptable to the system. It
is the one perfect strengthening’ laxa
tive, cleansing the system effectually,
dispelling cold:. heaaaclu s and fevers
gently yet promptly and enabling one
to overcome habitual constipation per
manently. Its perfect freedom from
et-.-ry objectionable quality and sub
stance, and its acting on the kidneys,
liver and bowels, without weakening
or irritating them, make it the ideal
laxative.
In the process of manufacturing figs
are used, as they are pleasant to the
taste, but the medicinal quaktiesof the
remedy are obtained from senna and
other aromatic plants, by a method
known to the California' Fig Strup

effects and to avoid imitations, please

CHRISTMAS IS DENOUNCED.
Hit Attorney Says Hit Charge It Out
rageous.
New York. March 28.—Carl Fischer-
Hansen, of this city, who was attorney
for Walter Christmas, the representa
tive of the Danish government, in the
overtures for tho purchase of the Dan
ish West Inillan Islands In 1900, was
Indignant at the conduct of his client
shown In his secret report to tho Dan
ish ministry lately published.
"Ordinarily legal etiquette,” said he.
"would provent my shaking; but this
report Is so defamatory ami outra-
gpous that I feel Justifled In washing
my hands of the whole affair.”
Mr. Flscher-Hansen described the
course of tho Danish report as It ap
peared to him.
Christmas undertook, according to
Mr. Flscher-Hansen. to start the sain
of the islands for the Horrlng minis
try. As far hark as 1880 the sale had
been almost consummated, but at the
last moment this government had
drawn back. Thus Denmark could
not make overtures or do more than
suggest that overtures would bo ac-
ceptable. This Christmas did. He
conducted Secretary White, of tho
American embassy at London, to Co
penhagen. "At that point," said Mr.
Flscher-Hansen, "his services ended.
The negotiations from thereon were
carried forward l>y the American min
ister In Denmark and tho Danish min
liter st Washington.
"The Horrlng ministry going out ol
existence In a few months was suc
ceeded by tho Senested ministry, to
which Christmas made his secret ro :
port, setting forth tho alleged obltga
tions he was under to various Amerl
cans.
"This report was evidently made."
aaid the lawyer, "with tho belief that
It could never see tho light of day.
But its publication has shown its ab
surdity. I am qulto sure that Christ
mas never saw the men ho mentions
and*I believe the report was made foi
the purpose of personal gain.”
