Order was restored anion*? the rioters
in the Rue St. Stevens early this
morning. Th<* i*olire. who had borne
the brunt of the lighting, were strong
ly reinforces! by gendarmes and civic
guards with loaded rifles. Orders
were issued to use all the force neces
sary to drive the mob out of the Mai-
•on du Peupel. %
Just as the order was about to he ex
ecuted the chiefs of the Socialists of
fered to evacuate the building quietly.
Bstimates of the number wounded dur
ing the riots vary from 4«» to lnO, but
scores of injured were carried off and
bidden by friends.
A large number of rioters were ar
rested and are still detained. The
burgomasters of Hrussels and subur
ban municipalities have proclaimed
that meetings of more than ten per
sons are prohibited and that any one
found carrying a revolver shall be lia
ble to six months’ imprisonment.
All Centers of agitation are bristling
today with bayonets. Squads of cava!
ry are continually patrolling the
streets and guarding shops which were
threatened with plundering by the riot

The atrikers threaten to burn all fac
tories where the workers refuse to

Strong detachments of cavalry are
now patrolling the district in order to
protect the factories.
A telegram from Mons says work
still continues in the Iloritiage district,
but a strike and disorders are threat,
enlng. Troops have been sent to the
district to rope with possible rioting.
Troops Ready for Action.
Additional regiments of cavalry. In
fantry an<f engineers arrived here this
morning. A .battalion is held In readl.
ness-for action at each of the bar
racks. All the troops are. supplied
with two packets of hall cartridges
and two parkets of so-railed strike
cartridges.
