It Is the sense of this b.dy, and
we recommend that tbe county commis

that tbe present farm is too small, and

The Oldest and Best
The Atlanta Constitution baa made
another one of the big scoops charac
teristic of the enterprising management
of that great newspaper, and it pub
lishes the story of a big. cotton mill
trust which Is about to be formed anti
which is to iuclnde not less than sixty
per cent of the Southern spnnnere.
The story will he found in our tele
graphic news columns, by which it will
be seen that the proposed trust la to be
incorporated under the accommodating
laws cf New Jersey, the mother state
of modern trusts.
The plan seems to contemplate taking
the management of the Southern mills
out of tbe bands of tbe present owcere, I
it.being stipulated that they are to
transfer their property to the trust, tak
ing stock in the trust company in pay
ment tberefor. Cash payment is to be
made to the present owners for all
atocks of cotton, cotton in process of
manufacture and goods on hand. It is
stated that a commtjjee appointed at a
recent meeting of Southern yarn spin
ners will report favorably on Mr. Un
derwood's proposition at a meeting to
be held at C harlotte on tbe 23rd of tbe
present month.
lhe formation of suebatrnat will
mturally effect tbe market price cf cot
ton. Striotly speakiag.it would not nee-
essarity affect the price of the staple, but
it must be expected tbal tbe poliay of the
trust will be to make it have it. Once
tne trust gets in control of tbe mills,
tbe price of raw cotton may be expected
to go down and .the price* of span .ma
terial to go up. By keeping out of the
market for a given time, say in the fait
of the year when the' crop is being de
livered by the farmer, a trust coatroll
ing sixty per sent of the mills can easi
ly make a dull market at home for the
staple, and' this will no doubt be the
poliay adopted.
If tho formation of trusts continues
at tbe present rate it.is only a question
of time when the people will rise in
their might at>4 do some smashing
