DALLAS REUNION
General John B. Gordon’s Touchin
Remarks at Parting—One of the
Most Memorable Gatherings In His
tory of Veterans’ Organization.
Dallas. Tex., April 25.—“This is the
saddest day of a happy reunion, for
today my comrades part from r^e
they part from each other. Another
year and another reunion will find
some of us, perhaps many, gone to the
last muster. Each year my heart is
wrung with the parting, even as it is
gladdened and quickened by the meet
ing. and I pray that we may be vouch
safed just one more reunion, if no
more, before the solemn reunion of all
men and all races beyond the river.”
Thus spoke Commander-In-Chief
John R. Cordon to a few of his old
comrades before the last session of the
United Confederate Veterans was call
ed to order. The tone of his voice no
less than his words showed the depth
of his expressed feeling. His words
were typical of others being said all
over Camp Albert Sidney Johnston.
It was a day of parting and tho
question, "I wonder If we will meet
again?” was heard from many lips and
many an aged head shook dubiously in
answer. Yet the day was not given
over to tho sorrow of parting entirely.
Every effort was made by the commit
tee In charge to offset the gloom which
It was known would come when good-
bys were said. Hands played as they
never played before. “Dixie.” “The
Bonnie Blue Flag." monopolized the
program and cheers In the Auditorium,
where the convention was being held,
and the old streets of the camp, testi
fied the happiness of the reunion was
still strong in the veteran breasts even
if mingled with the sorrow of part
ing.
Barbecue of Buffalo Meat.
^ To enhance tho attractions of tho
CftVnp for the last day a feast unique
In the history of reunions was pre
pared. Six buffalo, brought from a
ranch famous among cattlemen the
country over, were made martyrs to
the cause of a southern barbecue.
Yesterday six Immense pits were' dug
and as many heaping beds of coals
produced under the direction of an
expert In the barbecue business. All
night long the immense carcasses
sjowly roasted and when morning
broke the expert ” ’lowed there’d be
nothin' at Ed’ard's coronation mess to
hold a candle to it.”
It was noon before the exacting taste
of the chef was satisfied. The car
casses had been roasting for 36 hours
and were done to a turn. An Immense
crowd witnessed the cooking and now
a watery lot of mouths opened when
the meat, fresh from the coals, was
brought In.
“I’d be willing to march again,” said
one old fellow with his mouth full of
aavory moat, referring to yesterday’s
parade. “If they’d offer a reward like
this.”

Great Crowd Rapidly Leaving.
Of the people who were present dar
ing the reunion It was estimated this
morning that,fully 50,000 had depart
ed since yesterday afternoon. All day
the streets were tilled with people go
ing to the depots. Freight trains were
held on distant sidings to allow' of the
freest possible movement of the pas
senger trains. By tomorrow morning
the greatest crowd over entertained
In the history of Dallas, will have
dwindled to a few thousands. Little
complaint was heard. Many had suff

no fault of the men In charge of the
reunion, but rather of Individuals
themselves who came too soon or un
prepared. Areordlng to Colonel C. C.
