.West Indies say the eruption at Mar
tinique is decidedly worse.
The French cable company received
cablegrams this morning announcing
that the eruptions at Martinique
tinue and that ships are afraid to go
near the island. The latest messages
indicate that the number of deaths will
be about 40,000. Several of the small
er islands near Martinique have also

CABLE COMMUNICATION CUT.
London Finds It Difficult to Get De
tails of Disaster.
London, May 10.—Cable communlca.
tlon between London and the island of
Martinique Is cut off. The direct West
Indian cable received at 1:30 this af
ternoon. a cable dispatch from St. Lu
cia. saying:
"Sloop Juat leaving for St. Vincent,
presumably with tho object of ascer
taining what has happened on thatls-
land. Possibly took Oovornor Llewel
lyn."
Communication la still obtainable
with the Island of Guadalupe, French
West Indies, hut the nowa is congeal
ed owing to the confusion prevailing In
the cable system and the numerous
official messages fllod. The receipt of
the first direct cable news from Mar
tinique depends on how long tho
French company will take in repairing
the cable to Fort l)e France, capital
of the Island, on which they are now
.working.
The British admiral la communicat
ing with the commander-in-chief of tho
British naval Htatfon and a war vessel
will be directed to go to Martinique.
It Is apparent from the cable dispatch
es received that the eruption of the
volcano on Mont Pelee will not do
much damage to the summer crop,
which Is chiefly confined to the south
ern part of the Island and the gath
ering of wlilrh Is now two-thlnls over.
However, the wiping out of the mon
eyed population of the island, centered
at St. Pierre. Is bound to produce the
most serious commercial effect. Not
one of the business houses In London
has heard a word of Its agents in Mar
tinique. a partner of the principal
English firm dealing with Martinique
said to a representative of the Asso
ciated Press:
"1 suppose all our agents are dead.
Not much business la transacted be
tween England and Martinique. Al
most everything thence is shipped di
rect to Bordeaux, which suffers the
most. I know Martinique well. The
last time I was there, a few years ago.
there were only two Englishmen and
po American residents at St. Pierre
thought that town did a good business
with America in foodstuffs. A large
portion of the white population belong
to old French families, who preferred
St. Pierre to any other part of the Is
land. We never for a moment dream-1
ed that Mont Pelee would prove dan- !
gerous. Fifty years ago some steam
Issued from its crevices, hut no atten
tion was paid to it."
Rescued Four Hundred ar.d Fifty.
New York. .May in.—Tile French ca
ble'* offices In this city were advised
that thefr repair steamer Pouyer
Queentier has arrived at Fort de
France, having rescued 450 persons
from St. Pleire. 8he has returned Im.
mediately to the scene of the disaster
to search foi further survivors.
