THE AMERICUS WEEKLY TIMES-RECORDERs FRIDAY, MAY 23, 1902.
FOUND HATTIES IN A DBA WES.
Negro Given a Terrible Fright By
Jokeri.
The practical joker cot in bis work
here lesterffay morning with the re
mit that the negro porter in a Jrjgoods
■tore was fairly paralyzed with terror
ud knocked connters winding in bis
mad flight towards the front door
That he was not driven msane seems
abort of a mystery.
Someone killed a big rattlesnake at
Magnolia Dell Sunday, stuffed the
akin with eawdnst, and yesterday
morning placed it in a drawer in this
store, containing shoe airings only
A confederate of the joking clerk
came in and asked the porter for
pair of strings. All the other clerks
were conveniently ont of the way
The porter opened the drawer and,
. wither.! looking inside, placed bis
band npon the clammy rattlesnake
neatly coiled among the shoestrings.
For a second he stood paralyzed with
terror, nnable to either move or speak
Then his voice and legs came into
action almost simnltaneonely.
His shrieks conld be heard a block
away while he executed a Congo war
dance about the store, knocking coun
ters and goods indiscriminately in his
»frenzied desire to get away frow that
horrible stuffed rattlesnake.
And in the meantime the others were
greatly enjoying the practical “joke."

Made Against Young Negro Near
Americas.
Essie Daniel, a yoang mulatto ne
gro eighteen or twenty years of age,
was jailed here yesterday upon the
charge of attempted assault alleged to
have been made Sunday evening npon
a yonng negro woman with a baby in
her arms.
Daniel was captured by other a,,
groess who weretneemed at his con
duct. They held him until officers
conld reach the scene.
The alleged crime was almost com
mitted in the limits of the city, snd on
Snndsy afternoon when the bells of
a half dozen colored cbnrches were
ringing. Daniel heard them not.
The negro woman, carrying her babe
in arms, was suddenly set upon by
Daniel, it is said, and but for her cries
for help he might have succeeded in
the diabolical attempt. Her loud cries
brought several men to the rescue.
Daniel was jailed at once, and the
grand jury next week will investigate
the charge against him,
Coming and Going.
