ing many demonstrations of interna
tional good will, with French sailors

ets, Freni h flags entwining their folds
with the st-frs and stripes and with
oratory and music expressive of
Franco-American friendship.
The ceremony of unveiling was fix
ed for II o'clock this morning, but
long before that hoar the streets were
filled with marching men and with a
great croffd eager to witness the exer
cises and review. A battalion of
French seamen arrived by special
train from Annapolis early In the dav.
and headed by the crack hand from
the French battleship swung through
Pennsylvania avenue to Lafayette
square, where the shrouded figure oi
the French field marshal awaited the
signal for unveiling. The American
Soldiers, sailors and marines already
had assembled and gave their French

aside the veils enveloping the figure,

mander. standing proudly erect with
arm outstretched directing the for
tunes of war on the field of Yorktown.
A great cheer went up from French
men and Americans alike, and at the
same instant the marine hand broke

selllea" As the French national hymn

cuted the statue. Then the ambassa
dor. apeaking In French, delivered a
brief address.
Following the Freuch ambassador,
General Horace TVtcr, the United
States ambassador to France, spoke.
The orator of the day was Senator
Lodge, of Massachusetts, who began
his addrer.s as the French band con
eluded a selection.
As Mr. fudge closed the French
band played the "Star Spangled Ban
Her." The closing remarks of the day
were by General b. Brugere. of the
French army.
Blahop Sattcrlce brought the cere
mony to a close with the benediction
and the Front h nnd American forces
passed in revie w before the president.
