Mr. John W. A. Hawkins, one of
Webster’s successful farmers,—was in
Americas jaaterday. Mr. Hawkins
said that rains had been very partial,
and that while the ootton crop was do
ing well there wonld be comparatively
little corn made. The tong, dry weath
er wellnlgh mined the corn crop over
there, Mr. Hawkins said, and he bee
already ent a quantity of his own corn
for forage.
Sumter connty has added very sab
ataotially to her wealth within the past
year. Despite the absence of a boom
onr property values hare ateadilv ap
preciated, and the tax books show
that we are worth 837,145 more at pre
sent than we eonld show last year.
This exhibit is not bad, thongh the
gain thonld have been very consider
ably more, perhaps.
Tax Collector Dnnn finished making
np the tax digest for tha year yester
day, and a comparison of Azores with
the digest for 1901 indicates a gain ot
$27,145 for the onrrent year.
According to the lSOl digest the to
tal value of all property in the oonnty
of whatever kind waa 84,707,883. That
wonld have kept ns oat of the poor-
honse maybe, bnt we went to work and
at the end of a twelvemonth we point
with pride to this yesrs’s valuation—
$4,785,028.
And the difference in favor of lha
current year is $27,145.
And our population is rapidly in
creasing, too, the adults as well as the
pretty babies. There are, this year,
i.G’-W white polls against 2,807 last
year. These are white voters; the
oolored list also shows a very good in-
creaee. —
We bad oaly 23 lawyers last year
and have 80 this year, but these little
things cent be helped.
There Is one more dootor this year
than last, 23 against 22, bnt the death
rate shows no increase, and all of them
are making money.
The county appears to have spread
out somehow. Last year there were
bnt 294,203 sores of land returned for
taxer, while this year thi acreage is
301,277, Of course no one renigged
last year ia giving in his lands.

For Plains, Anderaonviile, DeSoto,

with the lands upon whion located, is
81,584.930. It waa not this much last
year by 800,000.

were being drawn by him against Hey

Tillman, Senator Tillman says:

Howard Committed to Jail on Charge
of Murder.
New Decatur. Ala.,'July 80.—Tho
preliminary trial ot Robert Howard,
the Louisville and Nashville freight
conductor, who shot Frank' Baur, tha
ball player. In Bucbhelt’s saloon re
cently, waa held yesterday. Bear died
two days after the shooting and How
ard was then taken to Huntsville and
placed In jail for fear of a mob. How
ard waa brought back for trial at 8
o'clock thle morning, and while the
feeling le etrong against him, quiet
reigns and there Is a feeling on the
part of the people that tho law shall
be allowed to take Its course.
The state Introduced ten witnesses.
The gist of the evlifJSee was that
Howard commenced the trouble by
cursing D&ur and that Baur took con
siderable abuie and then struck How
ard and staggored Mm backward, when
Howard drew hla revolver and fired
two shots, thegrst only taking effect.
The defense did not Introduce any
wltneaacs, but friends of Howard say
he will plead self-defense when the
case comes to final trial. Howard
was sent to jail without bond.

Narrow Escape From Death.
Canton, Ga„ July 30.—Captain T.
M. Brady, proprietor of the Geor s U
Marble Finishing Works, at this place,
had a narrow escape from being
ground to death under the wheels of
an Atlanta, Knoxville and Northern
locomotive. While out driving with
his little son a switch engine ran Into
his buggy and demolished It, broke hla
horse’s leg and threw Captain Brady
and son out of the buggy. Fortunate
ly Captain Brady only had ono rib
broken and received a few other
bruises, while his little son Esmond-
escaped unhurt.
