Alban? ’» Firit Squad Won Contest
By One Bird.
The second contest between the Al
bany and Americas gnn clabs took
place here yesterday and while the
margin o 1 difference was exceedingly
dose—one bird—the victory was given
to the visitors.
In the first team contest ten men
were entered, five from each cinb
■ Each man shot one hundred times, and

one the moat.
The resnlt was about as close as
ever occurs in trap shooting.
In the second team contest the Am
ericus men were victorious. Here, as
in the first contest, ten men were en
tered, five from each club. Tho only
difference was in the number of shots,
each man having fifty only.
In this contest the totals of the
Americus dub exceeded the totals of
• the visitors by 3S birds,
Albany sent up G. B. Flint, SI. W.
Tift, Morris Weslowsky, H. N, Hall,
J. A, Davis, Jr,, H. T, McIntosh, J,
P. Drinkwater, Monroe Thompson, J.
E. Moore, Mr. Stickles and Edward
Drown.
These were divided equally into first
and second squads.
Americas was represented at the
traps by H. W, Smithwick, K. E.
Lee, H, S. McCIeskey, 'J. B. Ansley,
0. E. Chapman, James Harris, H. E.
Allen, Dr. G, T. Miller, Babe Nix and
B, B. Hawkins.
Two or three of the Americas team,
who are crack shots usually, failed ut
terly to sustain their records yester
day. This, with the absence of High
tower, gave the visitors the victory,
though by a close margin.

BEQUEST AN IMMEDIATE TBIAL
Negroes Want Adams Case Disposed
of Quickly.
Monroe Adams, the mnrdurer of bis
own wife and daughter, will have an
immediate trial if the wishes of the
colored people of Americas are con
sidered. Yesterday a petition to this
effect snd addressed to Judge Z. A,
Littlejohn was being circnlated for
slgnatnrer, and the total number tfans
secured will probably >un into the
hundreds. The petition reeitee the
fiat of the donble homicide end also
nqneats Judge Littlejohn to con

to try the case. What the resnlt will
lie is not known ot oonree, but as the
fall circuit opens a month hence, and
as a special term of tfae oonrt would
prove ooetiy, Jndgo Littlejohn may
defer the trial nntil the regular term in

BE 8TARTS TO PACIFIC COAST
To Prove Claim of Americus Heirs to
Money.
Despite the appearance of supposed
faeirs in a dozen states, the Americas
claimants to the fortune of 9144,000 left
by Charles Hill in Los Angeles are still
confident that proof of their right to tbe
money oan be made, and that it will
vet be theirs. Bo confident are these
heirs and their attorney, Judge James
.A, Hixon, of their claim that Judge
Hixon will start for California one day
this week for tbe pnrpoae of looking
after their lntereats. He has indispu
table proof of the fact that Charles Hill
was once a resident of Americas. Upon
the establishment of this fict, with
Other evidence required, tbe money
left by the deceased will be claimed
for bis relatives here.
In his steel cage in the county jail
yesterday Monroe Adams, with hands
still red with the blood of his wife and
daughter, talked as unconcernedly of
the horrible crime as though be had
killed a couple of rabbits instead of
two human beings.
So far from showing contrition, he
rather gloried in tbe deed and said he
only felt sorry that he did not mnrder
four others as well.
The names of these intended vic
tims he gives without restraint.
Tbe homicide was deliberately
planned and exeented with terrible ac
curacy. Jealousy was, undoubtedly,
his motive, and with his passions
aronsed Adame went forth to kill with
no fear of the consequences.
The generally accepted theory of
the homicide is about as follows.
For several years past Adams, the
negroes here say, had been living upon
terms of criminal intimacy with his
own daughter, Bobbie Adams, (whom
he murdered. The officers make the
same statement, though they could
never secure evidence to convict.
Bobbie Adame was to have been
married this week to Hardy Robinson,
and it was, no doubt, the thought of
giving her up that prompted tbe in
human father to kill her.
The girl, on Wednesday morniug,
left her own home and went to that of
her aunt, the wife of Will Nightor,
about a block away.
It is said that Adams made dire
threats when Tie learned of her de
parture. He believed that Nighton
and his wife, Hardy Robinson and
Henry Sapp were instrumental in get
ting the girl away, and it was these
whom he says he intended to kill.
SWill Nighton was slightly shot in
the arm, but dodged before Adams
could kill him.
Adams says now that he did not real
ly mean to kill his wife. He suppos
ed he was shooting Nlghton’s wife,
sister of hts (Adams’) wife, making
the mistake under excitement.
The killing of his daughter, how
ever, was cold-blooded and deliberate
and for this Adams expresses no re
morse or regret whatever.
It was fear of lynching at the hands
of the other negroes that prompted
him to surrender.
When searched in jail Adams pock
ets contained seven shells loaded with
bnckshot, and it was these be intended
to nse upon Nighton and wife, Hardy
Robinson and Henry Bapp. He also
had a half bottle of whiakey and a
small phial of atryehnine.
Adama told Sheriff Bell that be in
tended to swallow the poison and end
his own life after he had mnrdered the
others.
The gnn nsed by Adama was a fine
breeoh-loader which he bad hired
from Henry Bagley. He stated to
Mr. Bagley that he wanted the gnn to
go bird banting. He had hired the
same gnn on former ocoasions and
nothing strange was thought of it.
After killing his wife and danghter
Adams tossed the gnn into a ditoh
near the old oemetery,
Adame is well known here aa a cook,
and only a few hoars before the homi
cide had prepared a barbecue dinner
for a pienio party.
He bears a bad record and, it is
said, terrorized his family to tbe ex
tent that members dared not tell of
the skeleton in the closet.
Several years ago Adams was tried
and convicted npon the charge of
horning Hamil’s store here, bnt upon
’second '.rial came clear. He is a
small, stout built mulatto, and not a
few of the negroes here feared him.
Adams told Sheriff Bell yesterday
that he did not Tcarc wbat became of
him just so ho was not sent to the
penitentiary. And it is not believed
now that he will cheat justice by get
ting oil thus lightly.

Indianapolis, Ind., July 20.—The
United Mine Workers may try to ob
tain the Impeachment of Federal
Judge Jackson, of West Virginia, who
restrained them from holding meet
ings to Induce men to quit work and
Imprisoned a number of organizers for
violating an Injunction, if. after a final
hearing, he refuses to dissolve the In
Junction.
Secretary Wilson admitted today
that the miners contemplate this
course, and that a complete transcript
of the case, including the complaints
and Judge Jackson's decision will he
prepared for submission to President
Roosevelt and the senate. Tho min
ers also intend to give to the public
the evidence In the case for the pur
pose, as Wilson says, of showing upon
what flimsy grounds the injunction
was issued.
The miners believe they have suffl
clent ground to Impeach Judge Jack
son. It is said that he Intimated that
he would drop the charges as to
‘Mother” Jones and others If they
would leave the state and promise not
to return,
Wilson says that If the impeach
ment procedings are begun, there will
be no politics in them. The miners
will not as!: President Roosevelt to
interfere with the injunction, as he
says they realize that the president Is
without power as to injunctions, hut if
