TflE AMERICUfc WEEKLY TIMES-RECORDER: FRIDAY, AUGUST 8, 1902,
EARTH TREMBLES NO
.MORE AH OS AN AMOS
But People Are Still In State
of Great Panic.
MANY HAVE FLED FROM TOWN.
Others Are Ready to Leave In Case the
Disturbances Should Be Renewed.
Havoc Wrought by Quake In Neigh
borhood of Los Anarnos'.
Santa, Barbara, Cal., August 1.—
Many of the Inhabitants of the town
of Los Animos, Vtiicli has been the
center of seismic disturbances since
last Sunday, liave left for places out
side of the earthquake belt. Tho3e
.who have remained could not abandon
their business.
The town of Los Alamos is situated
about midway between Santa Inez and
Santa Marla, In the long, narrow val
ley of the 1.03 Alamos, 15 miles from
the coast. It has about 300 people.
The Los Alamos valley is from half
a mile to one mile wide. The popu
lation of the valley Is about 800.
There are no brick buildings in the lit.
tie village, and the damage thus far
Is limited to the ruin of plaster, col
lapse of chimneys, the breaking o!
crockery and glassware, the falling of
the walls of the Presbyterian church
and two store buildings, and the do
mollshlng of an old abodo building
which was sertausly damaged In the
first quake on Sunday night.
The damage will not exceed $10,000
In the opinion of the old Inhabitants
of the place.
There is not a chimney left stand
ing in the town. One residonfw was
moved 1 Inches and split In oppdhjte
Corners. Not a building escaped
soipe injury, and it Is considered mi
raculous that no one was hurt.
Although no more severe earthquake
shocks have been experienced since
7:80 last night, the people are still
panic-stricken. Many of thofe who
have not already fled from their
homes arc prepared to leave In case
the disturbance continues.
Saved From Serious Fire.
Dr. H. C, Bagby, of Sauta Maria,
who was a guest at the home of D. P.
VVTlitney, undoubtedly saved the busi
ness section of the town from a seri
ous fire. When the earthquako oc
curred & lighted lamp was upset and
set fire to the place. Without a
thought for Ills own safety Dr. Bagby
rushed upstairs and found Mrs. Whit
ney vainly fighting the flames and
seemingly surrounded by thorn. Draw
ing her from her place of danger,
he beat out the fire with blankets and
thus saved a life and a large portion
of the business section.
Bouldera Torn From Mountain Side,
Parties from Ix>mpoc and outlying
districts have reached Los Alamos
With stories o( havoc in the hills. A
great landslide carrying down hun
dreds of tons of earth occurred near
thp Hoover ranch. The road from
Lompoc was hurled for 50 feet. As
fsr as the eyo can reach from this
grade to that there are spots on the
mountain side where huge' boulders
were sent thundering down the val
leys.
John. IL Drum, a mountain farmer,
reports a road-destroying landslide
In Drum canyoa. The face of tho
hills is charged with noises which
Drum describes aa the most terrify
ing sounds he evor heard. 1
The oil wells around tho town of
Los Alamos seem not to have suffered
Since the beglnnlg of the earthquake
shocks the temperature has been op
pressive, as much heat apparently
coming from the earth as from the
sun, which, for tho most part of the
time, has been shining brightly.
