Captains Hackett and Whldden, com-
mandor and mate of the brigantine,
who have the maps said to have been
drawn by a Nova Scotia miner, who is
said to liavo buried some treasure
there, are disgusted with the gold-
finding instillments which Justice Gil
bert, former court stenographer of this
city, and Enyeart, a prospector, took
down on the vessel.
The Blakely was 101 days reaching
the island from Victoria, getting a
taste of heavy weather which pre
vailed at that time, arriving at the
Island on April 17. After a day's

brought out and the men started work
ing at a point to which it pointed. Af
ter sinking a shaft 20 feet another
trial was made with the so-called gold
finder, and it pointed in another direc*
tlon, In fact, every time it was brought
out It pointed in a different direction.
Finally, getting disgusted with it
Captain Whldden and Hackett decided
i to test It with some gold coin on the
beach. It failed to find the coin, and
then a search for tho treasure was
•made Independent of it.
Holes were sunk where tho screw
of her H. M. S. Imperious and the
schooner Aurora had searched, with
out any better results. Provisions
getting low, It was determined to
make a start for home, and after a sup
ply of.corn and turtles had been load
ed, the vessel was turned northward.
This was on May 11, only five days
having been spent on the island. Cap
tains Whldden and Hackett still be
lieve that the treasure is there, but
place no confidence In the Instruments
of Messrs. Gilbert and Enyeart There
Is likely to be some trouble before the
business of the expedition Is settled.
The chairman of tho company, H. H.
Jones, Is charged by tho captains with
having acted In hia own behalf and
not In the Interest of the other mem
bers of the company. The captains
left behind some hundred shares In
the company which were to be sold
for them, and are dissatisfied with the
manner In which this stock was dis
posed of.
