Willimantlc, Conn.. Aug. 23,—Pres
ident Roosevelt, after spending
night at the home of John T. Robin
son, at Hartford, today resumed
Journey through New England,
train left that city promptly a

from turning out in force and giving
him a hearty send-off.

placed on the engine.
All along the line the small towns
turned out their entire population
each apparently anxious to share
the welcome which Connecticut Is ex
tending.

Negroes In Dougherty County Cut Bars
With Corset Steel.
Albany, Ga., Aug. 23.—Five Impor
tant negro prisoners sawed through
the bars of Dougherty county's new
Jail and made good tlioir escape.
They were John Henry Wilburn,
Charley Whitehead, Will Robinson
John Watson and Doll Johsson.
They procured a small file from an
unknown source and with this con
verted a common corset steel into a
saw. They cut through the bars of
the cage In which they were confined
and through the Iron rods of a w.'p
dow opening on the yard.
Wilburn, the ringleader. Is an At
lanta negro, who has done serVice for
burglary. None of tho escapes have
been captured.
RICH WIDOW IN JAIL.
Prominent New Orleans Woman Un.
der Forgery Charge.
Chicago, Aug. 23.—Mrs. Mlnnlo
Brown, a widow, member of a rich
and prominent family in New Orleans,
Is a prisoner at the county Jail charg
ed with passing forged checks at
Marshall field's store.
Mrs. Brown was arraigned In the
Harrison street police court and a con
tinuance granted for ten days at the
request of her brother, W. F. Scott,
of New Orleans.
The troubles of the woman are be-
lleved to have come from the dm3
habit. The brother lias been In Chi
cago for some time searching for his
sister, but until her arrest lie could
get no clew to her whereabouts. Tho
police say that she has been passing
forged checks for a month.
Child Labor Legislation.
Raleigh, N. C., Aug. 22.—It Is now as-
serted positively that the legislature
will enact a law forbidding factories
to employ child labor. Sentiment is
very powerful for It. It Is realized
that tho violated agreement by mills
to restrict labor by children has
brought about this and that the last
legislature made a grave mistake In
accepting that agreement from the
mills.
“Young Corbett" Prepares to Train.
Cincinnati, Aug. 22.—"Young Cor-
bett” with his manager and trainers,
arrived today and took quarters tem
porarily In a hotel. In the afternoon
he went to look for training quarters.
It is probatfte he will choose the place
on Price Hill, where Jeffries was In
training for the fight which was en
joined here.
