Submarine Eruption Between Sicily |
and Strcmboli Has Claimed Many j
Victims—One Hundred and Fifty j
Corpses Recovered at Modica.
London, Sept 27.—A -special from
Home, after confirming the reports
that Stromlill lias been in full eruption
for some time, says:
"The night scene was grand but
terrifying. Lava streamed down the
mountain sides seawards, whilst huge
bowlders were hurled from the crater
to a great height, falling into the sea
fully 2 miles from the shore. The
director of the observatory at Mount
Etna says there has been no earth
quake In Sicily, but probably thore
has been a submarine eruption oe
tween Stromboll and Sicily.
"One hundred and fifty corpses have
been recovered at. Modica. Hundreds
of victims were drowned In the open
country.
MANY HAVE NARROW ESCAPE.
Portion of 9-Story Building at Wash
ington Collapses.
Washington, Sept. 27.—The front
portion of the 9-story office building,
under construction for Henry S. Wil
lard, on Fourtenth street, opposite the
new Willard hotel, collapsed sudden
ly after 8 o'clock this morning and a
large crowd of people passing on their
way to business had a- miraculous es
cape from death or injury,
The accident was caused by over
weighting the two iron column, sup
ports for the front wall, tho pillars
being Insufficient to sustain the weight
of the S00 and 1,000 pound stones
which were being piled as a sill cjping
on tho sixtii floor. These immense
stones and a part of the iron frame
work foil to the ground, but fortu
nately the noise of the crash gave suf
ficient warning to the to workmen em
ployed and to the passersby. Only
one man, a laborer named Washing
ton Gordon, was Injured, but he was
able to rcurn to work.
HAD MILLONS IN POCKET.
But Painter Could Not Get Place to
Sleep.
Chicago, Sept. 27.—With $8,000,000
In his pocket and wondering what ha
should do with it, J. Pointer, Jr., of
Pittsburg, arrived in Chicago yester
day an d registered at the Auditorium
hotel.
Mr. Painter's pockets did not bulge
.with money, but a.bank check may
have represented his ability to draw
enough cash to purchase two or three
city halls like Chicago's. The cosh
is his because of the sale of the Paint
er Steel and Iron company to the steel
trust. Even his millions, however,
were not equal to the task of securing
a room.
"Try and fix you up later,” said the
clerk. So the Smoky City man, with
$8,000,000 to spend, settled in a leath
er chair to wait for a room.
"What’s the uso of money” he said,
"I can’t even hire a place In which to
sleep.”
“Why don't you buy out the hotel?”
asked a friend.
“Good Idea,” replied Mr. Painter.
“I'll see what they want.”
Before he had found Colonel South-
gate, however, Mr. Painter received
word that he could be housed.
