At that time the president had received reinforcements and had ovei 6,000 men engaged against 7,000 rev olutionists. The artillery played part never before seen In Venezuela. Shortly before 0 o’clock Wednesday af ternoon the revolutionists appeared to have gained a slight advantage. The president's artillery, which nuro be red 15 guns had been reduced to four guns. LaVictoria was crowded with wounded and there were no pro visions. The British steamer Indefatigable left LaGuaiia for Tucacas with pro- visions for the foreigu residents there, some of whom are said to be dying ol hunger ns n result of tho concentra tion measures adopted by the Vcnczir elan authorities. Tho Indefctigablo to accomplish her mission will have to - run the blockade of Tucacas. The German cruiser Vinota has also left La Guaira and It is regarded as probable that she is also hound for Tucacas. The French cruiser Suchet arrived at Carupano yesterday nnd entered a protest against the arbitrary arrest of private citizens, who were sub- soquently released with an apology. Fighting took place Monday and Tues. day between the government forces and revolutionists at Carupano. The German cruiser Panther has forced an entrance of the Orlnoca riv er, and has reached Ciudad Bollver to protect Gorman interests there. Unit ed States Minister Bowen has an nounced that he will not ask for guard of bluejackets to protect tho United States legation at Caracas, and all his colleagues will follow Mr. Bow. en’s example. Washington, OcL 1G.—A cablegram at the state department this morning from United States Minister Bowen at Oaracan, sent last nlglit, says: "Battlo Victoria continuing.” It Is believed here that Castro is making his last stand at this point an 1 that the fate of the revolution will be determined by this engagement. OLD CASE SETTLED. Had Been Pending In Court For Twen ty Years. Columbus, Ga„ Oct. 17.—The jury In the caw of Mrs. J. O. Christian vs the Columbus and Rome Railroad company at Hamilton, Ga.. hai brought in a verdict for $20,000 ddm ages for the plaintiff. Mrs. Christian's husband wax killed at Chlpley, Ga., la 1883 by the agenl of the Columbus and Romo load. Tin agent was tried for murder and wai acquitted. Mrs. Christian sued tht road for damages. It being alleged that Christian was transacting rail road business, having called to set the agent regarding freight, whet killed. The case has been in the suprem. court three times. Several years age Mrs. Christian was given a judgment tor $18,000. The Columbus and Rome road has no money in the treasury. Blsbee, Arts., OcL 17.—Two Mexi cans were run over by n train at Agnu Prleta, across the International lint from Douglass, Arlz., yesterday. One was killed and the other badly Injur ed. The trainmen were Immediately arrested and placed In the Mexican Jail. They are Ed. Patterson, engln cer; Fred. McDonough, fireman; Geo. UcCorse, ynrdmastcr. and F. II. Kidd switchman.
