THE AMERICAS WEEKLY TIMES-RECORDER: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1902. THE RUSH IN XMAS TRADEJSNOW ON JLmericus is The Mecca Purchasers. CHRISTMAS TRADE IS BOOMING. Already Goods Representing Thous ands of Oollare In Value Have Been Sold—Trade Will Bo the Best Several Years. Americas is the Mecca of the holt day shopper, aud while it is yet a doz on days ere Kris Ktingle is billed to arrive here the stores are nwo crowded with purchasers every day and goods of every description are being bought and put aside,. -Already the amount of business done is that of an ordinary Christmas. But really it is just getting in fnll awing, and another ten days will mark the best Christmas trade of recent years and merchants, in consequence, are happy. The shrewd purchaser will make bis or her selections now, rather than wait until stocks are pioked over and the best goods gone. Then, too, it can be done more satisfactorily now than when stores are literally jammed and clerks bnty. It is thought there will be no did onlty in handling*,the enormons trade that is already began. Extra elerks have been added to the foroes in all the stores, and the business is going to b6 handled in a most satisfactory manner. However, merchants insist that the people make their pnrohaees without delay and thos avoid any in' convenience occasioned by the holiday week rush. The wholesale grooery and frnlt merchants also are having the moBt satisfactory bnsiness at this season they bare ever known. While the country merchants have been a little baokward about putting in Christmas orders they are ponring in now at a wonderful rate, and extra night foroes have been added in order to keep up With shipments, 'Without an exception Amerious dealers in Xmas trlx declare they an* tioipatea big inorease in the trade Over that of last year. More people are eoming here to bnyand. trade is far [hotter, A WORSE BLOW IS GIVEN HILL. Clalmanta'of Money Declare Him Counterfeiter. And now a story comes oat [of the West to tbe effect that Charles Hill, tho former Americas mtn wlio died in Los Angeles, Cal. leaving a fortune of $142,000 to be fought over by 1,700 be:rr, more or less, was a rank coun terfeiter and eftover of “the queer’ out there. Of coarse ibe yarn is nutrne, bat it is told, nevertheless. This latest news comes in a press special from Los Angeles, {and states that a Mrs. Driggs has tiled in const an alleged will made by Hill, giving all bis wealth to her daughter. Tbe alleged “will" is written in ponoil on a scrap of draper and bears the signatures of George Manning, a noted connterfeiter, now deal, and N. Driggs, once the woman’s husband. It is claimed that Hill, Manning? and Driggs were counterfeiters, and 'that Hill thus made his money. This is only one of {manyXimproba* bio stories regarding the Hill money. There have at times been hundreds of claimants to the fortune of the d(- ceased Charles Hill, among them rela tives in Americas who, through Judge James A. Hixon, of this oity, have or- tablished the best claim of all others Jndge Hixon is confident of winning tbe caso. The 8143.009 is still in tbe Jhands of tbe pnblio administrator, [of Los Angeles, and the question of title will by finally settled m March next R. HIXON IS GIVEN OVATION AT CLUB. Stiff Advanoo in the Prloo to Consu mers Horo. Amotions people who have always banked on kerosene aa the safety valve of high prioea from a light standpoint, are now renigging on that proposition and are making goo goo eyes at the gas magnate. For the price ol kero sene, like everything else one has to bay, has gone ballooning. Amerlons retailers now ask 20 cents per gallon for oil that formerly sold at 18 to 15 oentr, and the price may go higher still. The rise in the price of illumi nstlog oil is attributed to tbe reeent rise in the erudeoll market. Sinoe the •nthraoite ooal strike and the conse quent eoarolty of ooal, erode oil has sprang into prominenee as a fuel in faotories, railroads and furnaces of all kinds as has tbe refined produot In home nee in heaters and cook stoves; these increased demands have eaneed the crude market to soar in the last three weeks. Just how far it will go no one knows. The Atlanta frieuda of Representa tive James A.
