Dodson’s Pharmacy. in fflealm of Society.\ Many charming entertainments marked the week just ended and all of these were graced by the presence of fair visitors, here for the holidays, Christmas week will, as heretofore, be the gayest of the season from a social standpoint and many very delightful fnnotions will mark the yuletide jn Americas, NEW PLANS FOR GOOD ROADS. The card party at which Mrs. S. R.- Sims entertained a largo number of young people Tuesday night, was one of the most enjoyable affairs of the week. Miss Overtrade Eberhart, of Co lumbar, was the guest of honor on this occasion. The arrangement of eoores was especially unique. A clut ter of natural holly leaves, arranged with ribbons, was punched as pro gressions were made. The ladies prize, a real lace turn ovor collar, was won by Miss Sarah Cobb. Mr, Harvey Weaver won the gentlemen's priz*. Mrs. Cur Sullivan Glover enter tained the Matrons Club on Wednes day afternoon. The house was decor ated In red and white cut roses and ferns. An elegant luncheon was served at the card tables at the close of the game of euohre, Miss Sarah Cobb and Mrs. James Davenport won the prizes. A beautiful event of the week was the card party, given by Miss Marie Lamar, Thursday afternoon from 3 to 0 o’olook. Miss Lamar was assisted in receiving by her guests, Miss Mo- (lee, of WaycroBS, and Miss Pope, of Abany. Miss Elizabeth Harroid was the fortunate winner of the prize. Mrs. William A. Dodson was hostess at a largo and brilliant card party Fri day afternoon, given in honor of Mts. James Glenwell Dodson. The entire lower floor was throws) open to tho guests and the house was beautifully decorated. The refreshments carried out the color scheme of pink and white. The prizes were awarded to Mrs. Ed Sheffield {and Mrs. Ghas. Fricker, If report be trne, the Postmaster- General is soon to be asked to consider » pretty promising plan for the better ment of tho highways of this country, submitted to the superintendent oMho free delivery system by a citizen of Pennsylvania Mr. Joseph W. Brown, It is based upon tho fact that only one serious obstacle stands in the way of developing the free delivery service, namely, the present condition of our country roads. Mr. Brow’s idea is that if a certain road is reported as practically impas sable for the carriers, the highway au thorities of the town wherein it is found are to have a reasonable Jength of time within which to repair it, and the penalty for their failure so to do is to be the cessation of free delivery in that locality. In his recent..report Mr. Martin Dodge, Director of the Bureau of Pub lic Roads Inquiries of tho Department of Agriculture, made some interesting comments: "Meet Me at Dodson's." Dodson’s Cut-Glass dis- “The circumstance that ovqr $3,000, 000]waa appropriated by onr last Con gross largely to be bnried in our mud dy roads in the delivery of our rural mails, while only tho small sum of $20, 000 was last year devoted to meeting tho road problem, indicates the groat need of education regarding the pres ent necessity and demand for vigorous and intelligent road work. “As much of these large appropria tions for rural mail-delivery conldbe saved if wo had good roads, it is ob vious that an am sunt equal to a consid erable portion of theso sums conld be spent to good advantage in educating tho people in the work of improving our country ronds, and thus forever close a large drain on our national cash bpx.” If the introduction of free mail do livery results in tho improvement of our country roads, our jural friends will have occasion to bless the art of letter writing and tho Post Department Office twice over.
