Son of President of Neal Loan and
Banking Co. Kills Himself.
Atlanta, Lee. 26.—Ben Neal Thorn
ton, sou of E. H. Thornton, president
of the Neal J.oan and banking com
pany, and one of Atlanta’s best known
and most popular young men, killed
himself last night in a room at the
ficotla apartment house by tiring a
pistol hall into his right temple.
There was no witness of the trage
dy; there was no statement left by
the young man, noi any intimation
given of any cause or reason for tak
ing his own life.
He was a victim of lung affection,
and had once or twice been west In
the hope that the change of climate
would improve him. This, however,
did not seem to have the desired ef
fect, and the belief that he hart but
Httle longer to live has long weighed
heavily upon him.
The news of his death spread ragtd-
ly, anil there were many inquiries
about him. A physician was sum
moned, hut Mr. Thornton was dead
when he arrived*.
Coroner Stamps was notified and
held an inquest in room 32, at the
Scotia, where the body was found.
The only witnesses were William T.
Newman, Jr., who was in the adjoin
ing room when the fatal shot was
fired, and Dr. W. S. Elkin, who was
summoned* by Air. Newman as soon as
he learned what had occurred. The
coroner's jury returned a erdict of
death from a pistol shot wound in
flicted by Ills own hand*, or suicide.

Motorman Hill says tile man was
lying parallel with the rail and al
most on It on the side of the track
and he was within 20 feet of him when
he saw him. It was Just at the foot
of a long hill, and the car was travel
ing rapidly and it was Impossible to
stop.
Tho negro was horribly mutilated
from head to foot, and the car was
thrown from the track, narrowly es
caping being ditched. There were a
number of passengers but. nobody was
hunt. The negro seemed to be sat
urated with whisky and* the odor per-
ailed the atmosphere for 10 feet.
GREEKS WERE BELLIGERENT.

Sons of Hellas Cause of Crimes in Bir
mingham, Ala.
Btnnlngham, Ala., Dec. 26.—The
quietest Christmas eve and Christ-
mas day ever experienced in Birming
ham has just become a thing of the
past. There was only one killing
and one other man fatally shot.
This Is considered a good record
for Birmingham and It shews well In
comparison with any Christmas of the
past. The reign of terror which has
been holding Birmingham in its grasp
for two weeks has about come to an
end.
There have been about 20 people
arrested charged with being connect
ed with some of the burglaries and
highway robberies and* this has in
some measure broken up the carni
val of crime.
A peculiar feature of the Christmas
crimes was that both were commit
ted by Greek fruit dealers. Christmas
morning about 3 o’clock George Par
ris, a Greek fruit dealer, shot and
probably fatally wounded Eugene Car
ter, a blacksmith.
About noon another Greek fruit
dealer named John Brocatos shot and
killed a negro named John McCoy.
There have been about 200 arrests In
the past 4S hours.
