AMERICUS WEEKLY TIMES-RECCRDER, FRIDAY JANUARY 3o, lp03.
THE GRANT SARCOPHAGI.
JPirln Betting Places For Aahea of
General and Wife.
Upon tile recent death of Mrs. U. S.
Grant preparations were at once begun
t ■ to make ready the empty sarcophagus
.which has for several years rested va
cant and waiting beside the one inclos
ing the ashes of the great general in
the crypt of the big white mausoleum
on Riverside drive. New York. The
twin sarcophagi are identical in every
way and were taken from the same
quarry.
The story is told that while General
1 Grant and Mrs. Grant were in Europe
' they paid a visit to the tomb of Ferdi
nand and Isabella. Tim thought of the
ashes of the royal couple resting side
by side through the centuries appealed
to the husband, and, turning to his
wife, ho said, “Julia, that is the way
we should lie in death.”
When tile general died, the great cit
ies of the nation sought the honor of
affording his hotly a sepulcher. New
York, however, was the first to offer
without condition a resting place for
both the general and Mrs. Grant. The
Offer was accepted, and Mrs. Grant
herself chose the site of the tomb,
