Chairman A. C. Bivins, of the newly
constitnted and dnly elected board of
police commissioners, on yesterday
made a formal demand of Secretary
Daniel, of the old police board, for the
books and records of that department
to the end that the new board might
enter upon a diseharge of its official
duties.
The request of Chairman Bivins was,
of conrae, refused.
In faei, nothing else oonld have been
expected, aa the police board mnddle
is sow in the superior court and tick
eted through to the higher court for a
final settlement.
However, it was necessary, from a
legal standpoint, that this formal de
mand for the books and reoords be
made npon the part of the new com
missioners, and while Chairman Bivins
probably got what be expected—a re
fusal of his demand—the position of
the new board ia perhaps strengthened
thereby.
As told exclusively by the Times-Ke-
corder on Tuesday morning, the new
polioe board baa instituted qno war
ranto proceedings before Judge Z. A,
Littlejohn, and an answer to their bill
is expected at any time.

GEO. D. WHEATLEY
LAMAR STREET AND COTTON AVENUE:
AMERICUS, GEORGIA.
SEVERAL DEALS IN PROPERTY. ARE BUILDING OUT ON BARLOW.
Ownership of Two Desirable Homes
Has Changed.
People who expeot to bny residenoe
property to Amerious are climbing in*
to the band-wagon right along, for,
while it brings a good price now realty
here is cheaper at present that it will
ever be again.!
Add the discerning citizen ie.diggtog
np hie dough and tuning it into
Amerions dirt. Among the sales re
ported yesterday was that of a pretty
residence on Chnroh street, near
Hampton and owned by Mr. Crawford
Wheatley. It was sold to Mrs. Leila
Watson, who will reside there to a
short while.
Mrs. Watson, it is learned, has sold
her desirable residence on Teylor
street to Mr. D. M. Bornm, who will
remove there early in Maroh.
Several Pretty Dwellings Being Erect
ed Out 1 here.
The last vacant property remaining
on Barlow street, between Taylor and
College, will soon be ornamented with
three pretty dwellings owned respec
tively by Mosers. Alien, Feld r and
Wagner. A few years ago there was
not a boose on this street for a distance
of three blooks, whereas a half bun
dred cozy homes are there now and
every one oooupied. This remaining
lot will soon be built upon, and then
Barlow street will be a “finished ar
tide” from the standpoint of pretty
and oozy homes.
Funeral of Captain Clay Largely At
tended.
The large conoonrse of sorrowing
friends whieh followed to Oakgrove
Cemetery yesterday afternoon the re
mains of Copt. 0. C. Clay gave evi
dence, if any was needed, of the very
high esteem in which he was hold.
Amerions has rarely witnessed a larger
funeral.
The body arrived at 3 o’clock, a great
throng awaiting it at the Seaboard rail
way station.
Many friends of the family residing
m the country came np with the body)
and these, with the friends in waiting
here, formed a long eortege that moved
on towards the cemetery.
The servioe at the garve, condncted
by Bev. W. L. Wootten, was deeply
impressive. Leaden clouds and banka
of fog obscured the sky and added to
the sombre gloom. Nature seemed to
r-'ngleher tears with those of a thous
and there.
Many handsome floral tributes well-
nigh concealed from view the broad-
olotb covered casket.
Among these was an exquisite do-
eign wronght in white rosebndB and
rarer white flowers, a tribute from
AmerionB Lodge of Elks. The design
was a magnificent orescent, and fasten
ed within the centre was a harp of
white orohids. It was made especially
to order by Atlanta florists.
Capt. Clay was a prominent member
of the local lodge of Elks, and in’,his
death their eirele is for the first time
broken.
The success attending the efforts of
Messrs. O. P. and W. P. Wallis last
season in the establishment here of a
canning factory has encouraged these
enterprising gentlemen to greater ef
forts, and the scops of their business
will be verv muoh enlarged this year.
Preparations to that end are now being
made.r
Fnrther encroachment upon the cot
ton patch will be made, and fruits and
vegetables will blossom and ripen ere
long into a golden harvest as a reward
for thrift and industry.
Think of a field of tomatoes as large
ss the ordinary cotton field.
That’s the kind Wallis BroB. will
plant, and they will likewise plant
acres of okra, corn and other vegetables
snitable for canning. And their neigh
bors and friends will do the same
thing, and altogether there will be an
abundance of track at hand to keep
the factory rnnning throughout the
summer.
Qood prices will be paid for all the
truck that is brought them.
Good wages will be paid the people
empioyod at the factory. It is an' infant
industry” as yet, but with such inde
fatigable workers behind it as the Wal
lis brothers it will grow.
They are the pioneers in the canning
business in Amerions, and while their
plant was not completed until late in
August last year the faet that it would
pay well as an enterprise was fully
demonstrated. This season they will
be “early npon the scene’’ and expeot
to can tons of frnits and vegetables
here.
The Times-Becorder has tested tho
merits of their prodnot and knows
there is nothing better, Snocess to
these enterprising young men.
