Americas, and the passage of his bill

' j Tendency oi the Times,
f The tendency of medical scence is
toward preventive measures. The best
thought of the world is being given to
the subject. It is carier and better to
to prevent than to cure. It has been
fully demonstrated that pneumonia, one
of the most dangerous diseases that
medical men have to contend with, can
be prevented by the use of Chamber
, Iain's Cough Remedy, Pneumonia al
ways remits from aoold or from an at
tack of lntluenea (grip)' and it has been
observed that this remedy counteracts
any tendency of theae diseases towards
pneumonia. This baa been fully proven
V in many thousands of caaeain which tbla
remedy baa been used dnrlDg the great
prevalence of oolds and gilp In recent
years, and can be relied upon with im
plicit confidence. Pneumonia often re-
■ salts from a slight cold when no danger
is apprehended nntil it is suddenly dis
covered that there is fever and difficulty

C'apt. John A. Cobb returned to
Americas yesterday from Montgomery
where be went recently upon important
business. ( apt. Cobb has a tender re

always affords him pleasure to go there.
It was there that bis distinguished
father, General Howell Cobb, presided
over the first Cingress of the Confed

over the historic old building Kr dev,
in which the Confederate statesmen
had formerly assembled, and which is
still the state capitol, (.'apt. Cobb was
accorded the privilege of the floor of
the Senate, then in session. He had
the pleasure also of meeting several

Disease is Very Prevalent Over North

Georgia.
While Americas has not bad a ease
smallpox in several years people here
are more or lesB apprehensive at pres
ent in view of the alarming spread of
the disease in middle and north Geor
gia. The whole town was vaccinated
three years ago when Americas had her
first case, and the few who escaped the
virus then are baring their arms to the
doctor now. From North Georgia,
| Middle Georgia—from all sections re
ports continue to come of the preval-
: enoe of small pox, There are more
; sore arms in Georgia today, perhaps
than in any other period of her history.
Local quarantine by some of the Geor
gia towns against their neighboring
villages is getting to be quite a popular
j pastime tbongh Amcricue has quaran
tined against none, and probably will
, not, as quarantine really amounts to
very little.

How widespread is the interest in the
movement, not only among the people
generally, those who have beard of it,

well,(especially tbe railroads, is shown
by thegranting ofa rateofonefarefrom

tbe state.
Both the(Central and tbe Seaboard
are, of course, inolnded in tbe list of

The tickets, on sale at all competitive
points, will be sold for trains leaving

16th, and tor trains of Febrnary ITtb,
with final limit Febrnary 19th. It is
hoped sDd expected to have a large at
tendance at this meeting.
The railroads, especially, are desir
ous of^having delegations attend from
every county in the state.
The^organization wishes to establish
in Chicago an exhibit of Georgia's ag
ricultural and manufactured prodnets.
To enable this to be done each county
of tbe state is to be asked to furnish
SISOOjand all who comply with this re
quest are to be allowed an exhibit of
each kind. For the beat iu each class
a series of prizes will be offered.
These exhibits are to be plaoed in
quarters in Chicago, and need to inter
est both emigrants and capitalists, the
one to movo to this state, the other to
investitheir money in tbe development
of its industries. To further this plan
eaoh conmy that sends exhibits will be

When a sufficient number of emi

MISS LOCKETT A FAIR HOSTESS

Among tbe entertainments of tbe

games and entertaining conversation
the hoars sped by only toa rapidly un

he has been for wellnigh a month.
While employed in Venezuela, nearly
two years ago, os an official of an as

Motormen Are Assailed and Roughly
Handled—One Car Leaving Barn Is
Attacked by Men and Wrecked by
Bricks and Stones)
Montreal. Feb. 6.—Rioting by the
striking employes of the Montreal
street railway and their sympathizers
began eaily today. A car was wreck
ed less than two hours after the mass
meeting held after midnight at which
the action of the union in ordering
a general strike was indorsed.
More than 1.000 street railway em
ployes attended the meeting and an
equal number of their friends waited
outside the hall fo hear the result of
their deliberations. The news that
general strike had been declared
was rceived with cheers, and the
strikers, accompanied by their friends,
marched toward the different car
barns shouting and singing.
A large crowd assembled at the head
barn in Cote street. Word was pass
ed around that a car was running on
one of the principal streets. A
crowd of strikers and their friends
went to meet It. When tho car
reached the corner it was met with a
volley- of stones. The motornian waa
roughly treated and forced to leave
the car. The mob hurled stones and
bricks at the car, completely wreck
ing it. A hurry call was sent for the
police. A patrol wagon was loaded
with officers and despatched to tho
scene of the riot, but before they ar-
ved the crowd had dispersed and there
was no further trouble at that point.
Later a motorman who attempted to
run a ear out of the barn was as
saulted and so badly Injured that In
all probability he will die. A ma
jority of the strikers are French Ca
nadians, and have the sympathy of
that portion of the community. It is
said between 1,000 and 1,500 men are
out.

Tucson. Arlz., F.eb. 6.—Advices from
Hermosillo, Mexico, state that Gener
al Luis Torre* has resigned his com

General Lorezo Torres.
The reason assigned by the minister
of war Is that Torres was not as a,ctlve
against the Yaqul Indians as could be
desired. Torres' friends claim that
his close friendship with General
Reyes, former minster of war, was
the cause for the call for his resigna
tion. Reyes is considered a formi
dable candidate for the presidency.
The removal of Torres Is said to be
In accord with- the policy of the ad
