LEWIS ON THE FOWLER BILL.

Hon. E. B. Lewis tho worthy and
able congressman from the Third dis
trict, is receiving many congratula
tions on bis splendid speech delivered
in the house last week in opposition
to the Fowler bill. All the Washing
ton correspondents of tho southern
press writo enthusiastically of_Mr,
Lewis’ groat speech.
Mr. Lewis is thoroughly familiar
with tho financial quostion iu all its
phases, and nono aro more competent
to handle currency legislation than
Mr. Lewis. The following is an ex
tract from his gpeeoh, which is attract
ing the attention of tho entire country:

Commission Stevens has undertaken
many progressive movements since
taking charfo of tho stato agricultural
department, but none of thorn promise
more for the material advancement of
Georgia than his presont effort to en
courage cane growing and syrup mak
ing in Georgia. As a practical and
successful farmer himself, ho fully ap
preciates the value of a cane crop to the
farmer and he has seen enough to con
vince him that syrup making may be
profitably undertaken on a large scale
in tho southern part of Georgia.
As evidence of how the cane industry
pays, even on a small scale in that sec
tion of the state, wo find in The Telfair
Enterprise a story which is convincing
and which every farmer in Georgia
should read:
Last year Mr. T. J. Whatley, one of
notice that he will tender his resigna
tion as Fresident at the annual meeting
of the board of trustees May, 30th; res
ignation to take effect at Juno com
mencement exercises. His resignation
came ns a great surprise. Ill health is
given as tho cause. ^

The elegant brick residence of Mrs.
M. A. Allgood at Trion was completely
destroyed by fire about 3 o’clock Tues
day morning. The family nnrrowly es-

saved. Mrs. Allgood had $5,000 insur
ance on the house and $5,000 on the
furnishings. The estimated value of
the house and furnishings is between
$35,000 and $40,000. The loss will ap
proximate $35,000. Of course many
things were lost that money can never
replace.

THE DESERVING NEGRO.
The press of the country irrespective
of section or politics and also the poli
ticians generally, are daily discussing
the past, present and future of the ne
gro, most of tho criticism being espee :
tally applied to tho South and his rola-

gent negro in this section knows that
the whito man of the South is his best
friend, nnd generally speaking, he is
happier and more contented south
of the Mason and Dixon line than any
where else. And why? The question
is easily answered—he is accustomed
and acclimated to the South. The
