New York, Mardx 14.—By means of
an invention of Miller Reeae Hutch
ison, a young Alabamian, who was
recently decorated by Queen Alexan
dra for his efforts in behalf of the
deaf, three children, deaf, dumb and
blind, 'have been enabled to hear a
pianist play Sousa marches, a phono
graph repeat the sounds and the
•ounda of their own voices uttering
the words "mamma,” "papa” and "hel
lo," In quavering childish treble.
The experiments were male at the
laboratory of Mr. Hutchinson and were
(witnessed by many persons.
The invontlon consists, primarily,
of a transmitter, an ear piece and a
email electric battery. By means of
theso Instruments sound Is projected
tato the ear in a manner to stimulate
the auditory nerve. The volume of
sound has nothing to do with the ac
tion of these instruments. The pen
etrating quality of the electric sound
•wave apparently disregards the mech
anism of the outer ear and affect3
tho inner ear direct.
Tho first patient brought out to try
the effects of tho Invention was Orris
Benson, who 13 blind, deaf and dumb.
A physician tried to make him hear
In various ways, but all his efforts
tvero In vain. Tho littlo instrument
tvas thon clapped to the lad’s car, the
current switched on, and Mr. Hutchi
son said In an ordinary conversational
tone “papa.” The youth worked his
fingers rapidly In the sign language.
1 ' ,■ "He says he can hear something, but
fioeen’t know what ft Is," remarked
Professor Vantassell, who was In
I charge of tho children. The cur
rent was made stronger. Tho youth’s
1 eyeballs wore raised and he smiled.
I Hen he tried to repeat the syllables
I I and In a weird treble cried shrilly
v ■ : "pah—pah." Noticing that the pa
tient was becoming quite excited over
• i ,• Ills novel experience, Mr. Hutchison
,ji suggested that one of the girls be
brought into the reception room. A
*- ‘ stfrl 18 years old who had lost sight
. - !■ , and hearing through exposure a doten
it C years ago, was led Into the room.
I' ’ Bbf could not bear a sound, no mat-
It Ur jlow loud, right against her ear,
? j>tft *wi$n fthe had the ear piese of the
J Instrument fastened to her head and
fi the plani9t at the end of the room
.It began to play a Sousa march, her
. cheeks flushed and her fingers beat
5 ]t time on a table.
| j Another girl, born blind, deaf and
