THE AMERICUS WEEKLY TIMES-RECORDER, FRIDAY MARCH 20. 1903.
BIG SALE OF LAND
IS MADEAT D'SOTO.
Company There Has Clem
ent Interest.
JUST A FEW NOTES
IN A SOCIAL WAY.
Society in Americus During
Past Week.
ORGANIZE BIG STOCK COMPANY,
Do Soto Fruit. Agricultural and Manu
facturlng Co. Goto the Oc Soto
Lands of 5,182 Acres—Will Greatly
Dovelop That Section.
M t
The largest land deal made in Sam
ter county in a long time was that
recorded yesterday in the office of the
clerk of court, wherein T.E.Clement,of
Fair banlt,Mum. conveys to tho DeHoto
Fruit, Agricnltnral & Manufacturing
Co. a magnificent tract of 5,182 acres
of fine land in that thriving town
The consideration, as set forth in
the papers recorded, was merely nomi
nal, though tbore are other and valu
able considerations.
It is understood that Mr. Clement,
who is a wealthy banker of Fairbault
Minn., is a largo owner of shares in
this company and one of the enterpris
ing developers thereof.
The Do Soto Fruit, Agricultural A
Manufacturing Co. is capitalized at
$100,000 and will do a vast deal in the
development of that town and section
of the county. The 5,182 acres owned
comprises some of the finest farm and
timbered lands in sonthwestern Geor
gia, besides valuable town property at
De Soto,
The farming lands ore rapidly being
brought up to the highest point of cul
tivation, while immense orchards of
peach and other varieties of line fruits
are being planted.
Already the company has about COO
acres in peacheB, and will increase the
orchards next fall. Sugar cane and
the manufacture of fine syrnp will
command a great deal of careful atten
tion. Eighty acres in cane has just
been planted, and thousands of gallon
of fine syrup will be made therefrom
Gunning factories will be buit there,
besides other manufacturing interests,
and in time thrifty little De Soto will
develop into one of Georgia’s most en
terpnsing young olties.

NOW POSTING THE MILLPONDS.
Free Fishing Here Seems a Thing of
The Past.

On the rale that “one must pay as he
goes” one must pay as he fishes
and the impecunious disciple of
Ieaao Walton will have to sidestep the
millponds hereabout and hook the gog-

,j | creek. For now the owners of mill’
F ponds about Amerioue are “posting’

for the privilege of fishing there. The

With the hearty cooperation of the
.Snmter Connty Agricultural Society, as
pledged in meeting Friday, Sumter
connty will send to the State Fair at
Macon an exhibit Jof ber splendid re
sources nnd manufactures, the products
of ber farms and gardens, second to
that of no other oonnty there.
Decided action to this end is taken,
and the farmers are at work.j
And Snmter will send an exhibit of
which every Snmter connty visitor to
the state fair—and there will be hun
dreds of them—may have just cause to
feel proud.
The agricnltnral society met yester
day morning in called session. The
subject of having the county repre
sented by an exhibit was discussed at
length and enthusiastically, and was
adopted by unanimous vote.
Upon motion of Capt. John A, Cobb,
the chairman, Fres. G. H. Sieg, was
instructed to appoint a committee of
twelve, of which not less than one shall
l>a from each militia district of the
county. Tbis committee will take in
band the subject of arranging the ex
Libit and appoint sub-committees.
The obair made quite an enthusiastic
speech upon the great advantage accru
ing to a county in thna being represen
ted at a state fair by an exhibit of its
products.
Through tbis agency, be thonght the
very best class of immigration coaid be
secured.
The chair will seleot the exeontive
committee of twelve, to manage the
fair exhibit, at his leisure, bat as soon
as possible.
The subjeot of holding at Americus
the Farmers Institute for thiB the Thir
teentb senatorial district, was also dis
cussed most favorably. A committee
of five, consisting of Messrs. G. H,
Heig, M. B- Council, John A. Cobb, J,
A. Hixon and W. T. Lauowas apppoin
ted to ooufer with Hon. Harvie Jordan
The institute will be held in Ameri
cus, some time in June, perhaps,
though this matter will be left to Presi
dent Jordan, who will fix the date most
convenient therefor.
Many of the representative farmers
of Snmter were present at yesterday’s
meeting, and the interest manifested in
the matter of a connty exhibit, as well
as in the farmers institute assured the
success of both. Several addresses
were made, all of which brimmed with
hope and enthnsiasm.
The Times-Bocorder is gratified at the
lively interest shown and, as always,
will lend its best efiorts in aid of both
enterprises.
CABBAGE IN ABUNDANCE HERE.
They Can
Be Raised Here
Little Effort.
At bis beantifnl home ont Lee street
Mr. A. W. Smith again demonstrates,
in the possession of a fine field of cab
bage, wbat can be done here, through
proper effort, in raising vegetables.
While gardeners generally are just now
setting ont tender yonng plants, Mr.
Smith is eating hardhead cabbage, far
larger and finer than any shipped here
from Florida. Mr. Smith set ont the
plants late last fall and, having a mild
winter, they grew vigorously and are
now in their perfection. The cabbage
will measure 14 to 10 inches across, the
heads being firm and green. Than Mr.
Smith there is no more enthusiastic
and successful gardener in the South,
and bis fine farm here is most remun
erative under his care.
A Severe Cold tor Three Months.
The following letter from a. J. Nus-
baum, of Batesville, Ind. tells its own
story. “I suffered for three months
with a severe cold. A druggiBt prepared
me some medicine; and a physician pre
scribed for me, yet I did not improve. I
thou t .led Foley’s Honey and Tar, and
eight doses cured me.” Defuse sub-

The announcement in the Times-Be-

TO SUPPLY THE MARKET SOON
Citizens are Hatching Chicks By Incu-
‘ bator Plan.
As the snpply of chickens here is ex
hausted and the motherlyjold domineck-
er refuses to resnme business, the arti
ficial method most be relied npon to
supply the defioienov. To this end Dr
J. M. Wilkes, and Mr, Will Dudley
have fired np their incubators, and the
old,wooden henaare now fairly sizzling,
Dr, Wilkes expeots to “take off” two
hundred embryo broilers next Tuesday
while Mr. Dudley will fortify against
the next convention of preachers here
by taming out a hundred little yellow
legs this week. If some expert would
only invent an artificial egg we would
be entirelyjindependent of the autocrat-
iu hen and her measley forty-cent off
spring.
