AMERICUS, GEORGIA.
Col, J. A. Walker, Captain W. T.
Zeigler and Captain Dan Bobannan, n
committee of prominent Pennsylvani
ans who have been in Americas for two
days, looking after the Pennsylvania
state monument soon to be erected at
Andersonville National Cemetery, will
leave this afternoon for Pittsbnrg, Pa.
Their stay here has been most pleas
ant, and they will take back flattering
reports relative to the completion of
the monument.
And a magnificent work in 'marble
and granite it will be.
T io massive column, which sur
mounts a base twenty feet sqaare and
rises to a sheer height of thirty-fonr
foot, is now at the national cemetery,
and the task of laying the Bolid fonnda
tion and getting the monument in
position will be started shortly.
Millee.fc Clarke, of Americas, have
the contract of supplying and erecting
this magnificent tribute to Pennsyl
vania valor, which is to cost teu thous
and dollars. This firm has ereoted
other state monnments at Anderson
ville, bnt this one surpasses all others
in cost, design and magnificence
The massive base will be in the form
of a temple, opening upon four sides,
the interior work especially being most
exquisite. The design is both uniqne
and beautlfol.
Upon this temple rises the column of
marble, snrmonnted by a heroio figure
in bronze, representing a Pennsyl
vania soldier.
Four immense bronze tablets hear
ing suitable inscriptions will appear on
the monnment.
The dedicatory exercises will take
place at a later date this year and will
be elaborate and impressive. The Gov
ernor of Pennsylvania, bis staff, dele
gations from the legislature and Grand
Army officers to the nnmber of two
hundred, are coming to Andersonville
to unveil the monnment.
It is understood that Congressman
Lewis will be requested to secare from
Congress an appropriation where
with to improve the snrround-
ings about Andersonville Ceme
tery. This Mr. Lewis will no donbt
gladly do, and the appearance of the
little town in Sumter will be very
muoh improved.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars
will be expended by Northern states in
thns erecting magnificent monuments

Americus people who, two days ago,
noticed a yellow deposit of snlphnrons
nature in yards and along pavements
here thought at the time that it might
have been wafted from the fertilizer
plant here, but not so. TIiIb shower of
sulphur, for sneh it proved to be, was
quite general, and it is generally agreed
that the dust was probably from some
volcanio eruption in Central America
and bad been wafted to this section on
n stiff breeze from that direction. It
was undoubtedly sulphurous, and no
other explanation coaid account for its
presence. The same deposit fell in
other sections of the state as well.

‘Were there other wonnds upon the
body of Jaek Smith than the ballet
wonnds inflicted by bis brother-in-law,
Tom Jones, in the hand to hand fight
resulting in the death of Smith three
weeks ago.” This is an interesting
question the relatives of the dead man,
living near Americus, wish determined.
And to that end the body of Jack
Smith has just been taken, from the
grave and carefnlly examined by two
good physioians.
This startling disclosure yesterday
adds interest to the recent tragedy.
The relatives of Jack Smith are not
wholly satisfied as to the story of the
killing, and they are determined to get
at the bottom of it, if there be any
thing more to be learned, despite
Jones exoneration by the court
The story of the tragedy, occaring in
Montgomery some three weeks ago,
wherein Tom Jones shot to death his
brotuer-in-law. Jack Smith, alleging
that the latter was intoxicated, and
trying to take his life, is still fresh in
tho minds of hundreds here who read
tne distressing details of the tragedy
there.
Both men were reared in Americas,
and this fact gave to the killing
strong looal interest. Both have many
frelatives here.
His slayer, Tom Jonep, was arrested
at the ttme and given acommittal trial.
AH the foots as then published were
brought out at the examination, and
Mr, Jones released, the opinion being
that he had killed Mr. Smith in pro
tection of his own life.
Since that time, however, relatives
of the dead man here, still dissatisfied
with the story of the tragedy and with
the hope, doubtless, of securing addi
tional evidence for the prosecution of
the case, had the body disinterred two
days ago and carefully examined by
two physioians, Dr. Wise and Dr. Lo
gan of Plains.
Knife wounds, it is alleged, were
found upon the body, but whether
this wob made during the struggle, or
by the undertaker who embalmed the
body, is not known to us.
The relatives of the dead man here,
it is laid, believe there is a long and
nopnblished story connected with this
fearfnl tragedy, whioh they propose to
sift to the bottom. The best detective
skill, it is said, will be employed and a
different story of the killing of .Tack
Smith by Tom Jones may yet he given
out.
The affair is one of much interest in
Americus, where the families of both
men are well known.
