HER PRISON FARM LIFE.
The convict farm life of Mamie Do-
Christ, as described by a representa
tive of Tho Press, who visited her at
tho state farm on Sunday, does not
complain of it. Like most women
when she cannot solect tho cloth her
self she protests at tho material of
which her clothes aro mado. / That is a
feminine trait, we have been led to bo-
lieve.
Seriously, this young woman seems
to havo readily settled down to make
tho beat of hor prison life and has de
veloped rather soon into a well-behaved
prisoner. Her sentenco was not for a
long term, and as she is young her ser
vice at tho state farm may not bo so

England and Gsrmany Approve Presi
dent’s Chicago Spsech.
New York, April 4.—The strenuous
not® of President Roosevelt's Chicago
speech arises above tho tumult of tho
Balkans and court functions at Lis
bon and Copenhagen, cables Tbo Tri
bune’s London correspondent.
Tho speech Is reported fully In the
general press dispatches am5 common*-
ed upon favorably, as an authorita
tive exposition of tbe policy of tho
United States government. The close
ness and Impartiality with which the
president balances tbe good faith of
the British and German governments
in the Venezuelan affair causes dis
appointment among those anxious to
secure preferential treatment In fa
vor of England, but the passages deal
Ing with the inter-oceanic canal and
tho development of American naval
power are welcomed as proofs that
buncombe has gone out after favor,
and that action has taken the place
of vagus blustering. The altruism
of the president's speech Is not under
stood In the capital of an empire which
has been built up on the principle of
enlightened' self-interest The objec
tion Is raised by somo writers that

unless by the seizure of territory, and
