1- as a distinguished visitor in Ameri-
, if is yesterday, though he wap proba-

• sen accorded him. The northbound
' t' 1 jatibnled train, arriving here at 3:40
.1' m. was crowded with northerners,
^ . )'• ^taming home from Florida, and Mr.
■ i‘ arnegie was one of the number.
i 1 '. lit Ameriens did not seem to thrill
, j |im to any extent, as he merely looked
' ;|ra| i 3f .at of the oar window and did not even
- j ik how tbe polioe commission fight

teen given the new fire horses. Andy
With legs tightly pinioned by steel
manacles and wrists clasped together
with glistening braoelets and made
doubly secure by a stout rope, Gar
field Thomas, one of the most desper
ate black criminals in Georgia, was
brought to Ameriens yesterday en
route back to the penitentiary.
Thomas has led a strennons life re
cently in “fanning ont" officers, bnt
its all over now.
The black desperado was in charge
of Sheriff Etheridge, of Jones county,
from whence the negro escaped, Bud
several hoars had to be spent in Ameri
cas between trains.
Garfield Thomas has been a black
senration in criminal oircles recently.
Upon bis arrest inColnmbus.be knock
ed down a policeman and made his es
cape across the river to Fboenix City,
Ala. where a battle royal with officers
resulted and Thomas was well punctur
ed with bullets.
He next showed at np Baena Vista,
where the officers took him after a des
perate fight, held him* for Sheriff
Etheridge.
Sheriff Etheridg6 brought him down
from Baena Vista yesterday, and left
the night train for Jones connty.
The noted desperado attraoted mnoh
attention at the depot here. Ho is a
giant in strength, as blaok as a barrel
of ink, and every foature betokens the
canning, unscrupulous soronndrel.
Sheriff Etheridge kept an eagle eye
upon Thomas, and it is a safe bet that
be will land him in the penitentiary ail
right.

Farmer Kills a Negro, Thon Takes His
Own Life.
4
Particulars reached Americas yester
day cf a double tragedy enacted in
Webster county the day before where
in Mr. J. L. Johnson, a prominent
eitizen of Weston, killed a negro, Ja
cob Daniels, and then turned the
weapon upon himself, taking his own
life. The doable killing created
morrow In Effort to Have Sot Asldo
the Will of the Deceased Wherein
He Disposes of His Estate
The first gnn will be fired tomorrow
in what promises to be a lively legal
fight for an estate, the value of wbioh is
variunsly estimated from 820,000 to
$40,000 and in whioh all the parties at
interest are colored people, heirsolaim-
ant to the property of Elbert Head.
The first skirmish will take place now
in the conrt of ordinary.
This will be an attempt to set aside
the will of the deceased made many
years ago and in whioh he beqaeathed
his entire estate to Catherine Head, a
neice of the testator’s by marriage.
As is well known here, Catherine
Head afterwards married Joseph Dis-
mnke, the well known colored lawyer
here who, at the death of his wife, in
herited the valuable Head estate, con
sisting oi nearly a hundred honses and
lots, Dismnke has since been in
peaceful.'possesBion of the property.
Quite recently thongh the unexpect
ed heir showed np in the person of
Evelyn Broadbnry, of Troy, Ala.
The woman asserts positively that
she is the own neice of Head, his sis
ter’s child, and that at the time of the
making of his will bequeathing his es
tate to Catherine Head he evidently
thought her doad. She assertB that
she is the rightful heir to the estate
and will make a fight to secure it.
The case promises to be stubbornly
fonght to a finish, as good lawyers are
employed on either side.
Chronic Bronchitis Cured.
"For ten years I had chronio bron
chitis so bad that at times I could
not speak above a whisper,” writes Mr.
Joseph Coffman, of Montmorenci, Ind.
T tried all remedies available, but
with no success. Fortunately m; em
ployer suggos ed that, I try Foley’s
Honey and Tor. Its effect was almost
miraculous, acd I am now cured of the
diseaso. On my recommendation many
people have used Foley’s Honey and
Tar, and always with satisfaction.” El

There ia an “Amerions end”

circumstantial evidenoe of the misap
propriation of a small amount of post-

No reason can be assigned for tbe
deed, and Mr. Johnson’s friends are
still seeking the oanse.
Armed with a shotgun, he went to a
field where Daniels, with several
hands, were busy planting oorn. He
casually remarked to the old negro
“yon are planting com,” and then
shot him with both barrels.
Daniels Ml in the corn rows and ex
pired in a few minutes.!
As a finishing stroke Johnson palled
a pistol and fired another ballet into
the dead negro’s body, after which he
walked off, warning the terrified dar
kies not to prosecute him.
A coroner's jury investigating the
killing of the negro, had scarcely fin
ished .the investigation, when some
negro women reported the finding of
another dead man about ono-half a
mile away, near a swamp.
The jary went to the scene and upon
investigation found it wan Mr. Jphn-
son, who had gone this distance from
where ho had killed the negro; then he
sat down or lay down, jndgmg from
the position in whioh the body was
fonnd.
He then unfastened both shirts, and
with the same pistol he had shot the
negro, shot himself through the body,
killing himself instantly, as there did
not seem to be evidence of any strug
gling after he had shot himself. The
people are at a loss to know what
prompted Mr. Johnson’s net.
He leaves a wife, who is in delicate
health, and also four little girls.

GREAT OUTPUT OF FERTILIZER.
Farmers arc Using It Liberally This
Year.
While farmers about Americus have
need no more fertilizer this year than
last season, they will be interested in
the faot that over 5,000,000 fertilizer
and ootton seed meal tags have been
sold by the Georgia agrfonltnral de
partment, and the unprecedented sale
-has caused tbe department to advertise
for bids to supply the department with
0,000,000 tags with the privilege of re
newing the order. The sale of tags
dates from Ootober, 1002, and np to
date over $40,000 baa been deposited
from the sale of these tags. The sale
of fertilizer is heavier tnis year than
ver known before and the indications
show that the Georgia farmers are
more prosperous.
