AMERICUS WEEKLY TIMES-RECCRDER, FRIDAY AUGUST 7, 1903.
DO YOU GET UP
WITH A LAME BACK?
Money In Cuban Treasury.
New York, August 1.—After tho pay
ment of Ike government employes on
Friday, says a Tribune dispatch from
Havana, the Cuban treasury contained
<3,500,000. This Is an increase of
<40Q/>00 over the balance June 30.

Georgia Senate Has Adopted
Resolution.
TRANSMITTED TO HOUSE.
Referred to Committee on Judiciary-
Investigation of Alleged Charges of
Lobbying—Othe Matters Consid
ered.
Atlanta, July 31-Oliargcs of "lob
bying'' made upon the floor of the
house, and the report of these charges
by the newspapers—accompanied In
some instances by comment con
strued aa reflecting seriously upon tile
members ol the general assembly
were responsible for the senate's adop
tion, yesterday, of a resolution call
ing for a joint committee of Investiga
tion. This resolution was Immediate
ly transmitted to the house, where It
was inferred to the committee on Ju
diciary. This committee at Its meet
ing in the afternoon adopted a substi
tute for the original 'resolution In which
the wording of the original was some
what changed.
With the adoption of either set of
resolutions, an investigation is assured.
The men who have mado charges of
lobbyism—which is a crime clearly de
fined lu the statutes of Georgia—will
be given full opportunity to produce
■-.their prSoI, if they have any; aud
any person or persons lipve been guil
ty of this crime, tho way will bo pav
ed for their punishment.
The house spent a largo part of the
day yesterday in seemingly unneces
sary wrangling. Thore was a long
discussion of the question as to wheth
er members of visiting committees
should have only actual expenses as
per Itemized statement, or should be
permitted to charge Tallroad fare when
they tiavel on passes. The itemized
statement won the day.
■file vagrancy hill by Mr. Calvin,
of Richmond, was passed, as were also
bills to amend tho alternative road
law and the law about one railroad
paralleling another wltbln 10 miles, so
as to exempt suburban electric lines.
The house spent Borne time consid
ering reports from the committee on
rules. It refused to entertain the idea
of a steering committee, and instruct
ed the rules committee to report on
the resolutions calling fpr special or
ders.
An hour of the afternoon session was
spent in debating a point of order and
an appeal from the decision of the
chair relative to a substitute on the
uniform text-book question.
Then when a resolution was report
ed filing the convict bill as a special
order for next Tuesday morning the
bouse refuted to adopt it, passing in
atead a resolution to stick to the house
calendar until Wednesday.
Absolutely nothing has been done by
the house relative to the disposition of
the felony convicts and the body ap
pears to have been largely frittering
•aw-ajrlls time In useless wrangles.
The Indications are now that this
question, the most important of the
session, will not be settled before mid
night of the last day of tho session,
perhaps not until early morning of the
' day following.
The house passed, by a vote of 88
to 3, the till of Senator Perry, of the
thirty-third proposing to amend section
2180 of volume 2 of tho cbde relative to
the laying out of routes of street rail
ways.
This bill exempts Bircet and subur
ban laliways, operated by electricity,
from the provisions of tho law which
■ prohibits the building of one line o$
railroad within 10 miles of and paral
lel to another. There was no special
opposition to the bill and R would un
doubtedly have had a larger vote had
not tho attendance been small.
