TURKISH ATROCITIES

MASSACRE
AT
KASTORIA
Terrible Turk Slaughter* Indiscrimi
nately Bulgarians and Greeks, Men,
Women and Children—Peasant Wo
men Horribly Mutilated.
Sofia, Bulgaria, Sept. IS.—Further
reports from Kastoria say the city is
burning and that the massacre of its
p-opulation (estimated to have been
numbered at 10,883 persons) was in
desoribably terrible. The Turits
slaughtered indiscriminately Buigari
ans and Greeks, men, women and chit
dren.
A Turkish war balloon is reported
ts have been seen hovering lor the
last three days ciose to the Bulgarian
frontier in the vicinity of Haskovo.
A severe fight has occurred at Ullvt-
xa In the mountains of Kratovo be
tween 2,000 Turks and 80 insurgents.
It continued for eight pours. The
Insurgents used bombs with deadly ef
fect. About 100 Turks are reported
to have been killed and many were
wounded. The insurgents had two
men wounded.
A fight is also reported to have tak
en place at Rupelpaso, near Seres,
■where insurgent bands recently sur
rounded and annihilated a whole com
pany of Turks. The bands then iled
to the mountains. Three battalions
of Turkish troops have been sent from
Salonica to pursue them.
A' small body of peasant Tefugees,
near Presba, who were starving In
the mountains, started to seek food.
At Nakaletz they were met by Turk
ish soldiers who killed them all and
horribly mutilated the women.
NOT THE HALF TOLD.
Turkish Atrocities Are Said to Have
Been Underestimated.
London, Sept. 18.—The Westminster
Gazette says a well known London
Journalist cables from Belgrade as
follows:
"Starting with pro-Turkish sympa
thies, I have found overwhelming evi
dence convincingly proving that the
Turkish atrocities are rather under
estimated In the reports of^gritish con
suls, bankers and unprejudiced people.
Foreign Minister Tzokoff tells me he
knows cases of starving women in the
forests killing two of their own chil
dren to preserve the third. The for
est wanderers will all perish of cold
within two months."
Europe, adds the Westminster Ga
zette, dealing with the Kastorla re
ports, is bound to interfere whether by
conference or as a concert.

Has Time For Breaking Up of Euro
pean Turkey Arrived?
Berlin, Sept. 18.—The German gov
ernment bold In view four points In
the Balkan situation:
First, does Russia regard that the
time for the break up of European
Turkey baa arrived? The German min
isters have been unable to penetrate
Russia’ ultimate instentlons and met
with displeasure the concerted attacks
of the St. Petersburg - papers on Ger
many, which Is being described as be
ginning the background and taking
pleasure in the extirpation of Slavs
In European Turkey.
Second, if Prince Ferdinand Is per-
snaded that his throne is dependent on
a war wlth'Turkey, then war Is cer
tain. Every effort should -be made tc
tranqullize Prince Ferdinand’s mind.
Third, the meeting of the sovereigns
attended by their foreign ministers Is
expected to clear up the obscurities
of the situation and enable German
statesmen to forecast the future. The
emperors of Germany and Austria meet
at Vienna today.
T%e czar meets Emperor Francis
Joseph Sept. 29, and will then visit
the king of Italy.
Fourth, the project for an Austrian-
Russian joint occupation of Macedonia
has been wholly abandoned, aad thers
Is not the least likelihood of a renew
al of the preparation.
Despite the fact that the Batkao alb
nation has grown worse, Turkish funds
rose again on the bourae today.
Socialists' Congress.
Dresden, Sept. 18.—At today's ees
alon of the Socialists’ congress Her!
Von Vollmar spoke for four hours, in
reply to Herr Bebel. • The essence ol
his discourse was that there was nc
crisis in the party except a personal
crisis, Herr Bebel seeing with gtlel
his leadership In parliament threat
ened. Herr Bebel,. the speaker, add
ed, spoke to the congress as Orom-
well spoke to parliament and arrogat
ed the right to judge and condemn mo
tires, ho desired to convert the party
into a church with himself as supreme
pontiff.
-As ES delegates have given notice
of their intention to speak, It la prob
able that the congress will sit through
next week.
Tragedies In Far North.
Seattle, Wash., Sept 18.—Charles
Carlson, of San Francisco, has been
drowned la the Chignlk river on the
'Alaskan peninsula About the same
time John Nelson was killed by 4
half-breed named Wilson. Wilson fled
to the mountains.
