Lexington. S. C., Oct. 3.—When the
trial of J. H. Tiilman was resum
today Judge Cary announced that an
adjournment would be taken at 1:3U
o'clock today until 10 a. m. Tuesday

witness, said he was standing on Main
street in Columbia on the afternoon
ot Jan. 15, near the corner of Gcr-

He said he did not see a weapon in

C. M. Lide, of Columbia, said he was
walking on the left side of Main
street, going to his dinner on Jan. 15,
and when he was just south of the
transfer station he saw Mr. Gonzales
walking ahead of him going toward
the state house. Continuing, he said:
“When I got about the front of the
bill board next to the transfer office I
just saw Mr. Tillman throw up ?ii«
arm and shoot just that way (indicat
ing). I did not Bee where Ijo drew
his pistol from. He said that a man
whom he-afterwards learned to he Sen
ator Talbird, jumped between them
and said: “T%is thing must sop.”

toward the corner.

at the time of the shooting, said he
heard the shot and saw Tillman have
a pistol In his band. He said he heard
the defendant say:
"Received your message.”
He then described the movements of
the defendant and Mr. Gonzales. The
witness said he did not think Mr. Till
man backed off file pavement, but that
he turned and walked away. The de
fendant, he said, raised his pistol again
but did not point It at Gonzales.
Mrs. Melton, a clerk In the engross
ing department of the state legislature,
stated that she waB walking down from
the state house on Jan. IE and that in
front of her were Lieutenant Governor
Tillman and two other men. Mr. Gon
zales, ,she said, was coming from the
opposite direction and as he approach
ed the three men he passed diagonally
across to the Inside of the pavement
to pass through the opening between
Senator Brown and the wall of the
transfer station. She heard a report
and then hastened away, and saw noth
ing more. Mr. Tillman, she said,, was
on the outside, Senator Talbird in the
middle and Senator Brown on the out-
aide

Tragic Accident at Columbus,
Many Others Injured.
B Columbus, Ga., Oct. 1.—Two are
dead and several era injured as the
result of a bad cave-ln In a deep trench
In front of the board of trade
building on Eleventh street Wednesday
afternoon.
The dead are:
Robert L. Johnson, superintendent
of public works, of the city of Colum
bus.
Brad Smith, a negro laborer In the
employ of the city.
The Injured aro:
6enny Shorter, a negro city hand;
badly bruised and perhaps Injured In
ternally. >
Charles Clayton, a negro, painfully
bruised.
Ed Hargrove, a negro city hand,
badly hurt, but will probably recover.
John Harris, a negro city hand,
gainfully bruised.
A trench S feet wide and 12V4 feet
deep had been dug from the new build
ing to the sewer out In the middle of
the street, ao as to glvo the building
newer connection. The sewer was to
be tapped, and Mr. Johnson went down
lute the trench to show Howard Da
rt*. a negro laborer In the employe ot
the city, where to cut Into the sewer.
Mr. Johnson had pointed out the place
and waa about to go out of thedltch
when the cave-ln started.
Mr. Johnson ran five or six feet,
ytien be waa caught by tho dirt and
burled to his waist.
Efforts were made to rescue him
when a second cave-ln occurred, bury
ing him completely.
