St. Petersburg, August 19.— 1 p.m.
—A feeling almost akin to despair
reigns in the much-tried Russian Ad
mlralty. The official report of Vice
Admiral Skrydloff coming on tho heels
of the known losses sustained by the
Port Arthur squadron In Its despetata
sorties of August 10. and the anxiety
over the fate of the warships still un.
accounted for, not only confirming the
sinking of the Rurlk but showing that
the lnjurlea sustained by the Gromobol
and Rossia In the fight with Vice Ad-
nlral Kamlmura’s squadron, were even
greater than anticipated, completes the
crushing nature of the blow to Rus
sia’s Ill-starred naval forces in the

Is also a disposition to censure Rear
Admiral Jessen for abandoning the
Rurlk, even though standing by her
would have meant that the Gromobol
and Rossia would have shared her
fate. Tho chief mystery at tho admir
alty here is why Vice Admiral Ka-
mlmura drew off when Admiral Jes-
sen’s ships were at his mercy. Tho
only explanation is that his squadron
must have suffered such frightful dam.
age that it could not continue the bat

Is confirmed that tbe losses of
officers and men on board tho Rossia
and Gromobol were E0 per cent of the
former and 25 per cent of tho latter,
showing the dreadful havoc caused by
tho fire from the Japanese ships, even
at a range exceeding throe miles.
Private reports say the decks of the
Rossia were veritable shambles.

MARRIED AT DEATH BED.
Queer Indian Cremony to Insure Poa
session of Property.
Detroit, Mich., August 20.—Slowly
dying and scarcely able to make thl
necessary utterance, James Bahwetuch
Yosh, chieftain of tbe remnant of the
Chippewa tribe, which still lives north
of Bay City, Mich., has been married
to Martha G. Nah Shank, who, ao
cording to Indian ceremony, has bees
his wife for the past 10 years.
Bahwetuch Yosh owns considerable
property. He Is 72 years of age, and
his wife Is 55. With death near, he
wished to Insure his wife’s possession
of his goods and chattels.
Although the couple have married
children, the legal ceremony was neo
essary, because the law will not reo
ognlze a common law marriage be
tween Indians. It Is told that the
original Indian marriage was tho great
est event of the times among Mlchl-
gan Indians.
