The sight of an iee wagon yesterday cansed tbe same revulsion of feeling to the average Amerions oit as wonld a water wagon on Christmas eve. An A'lanta divoroee desoribes her bneband as a "high toned hobo and bird of passage.” Old Peaohtree just can’t be kept mnzzled. This is the brand of weather wherein the eoal man, with the dignity becom ing his station, refuses to notioe tbe poor ioe man as he passes by. AmericuB has, for three days, strug gled through the vilest weather of a twelvemontb; sliet, rain and stnsb, and little relief yet in sight. The Hon. Jim Woodward is suggest ed as a good man to help Teddy organ ize his peaco conference. The Hen. Hob Fitsimmons would be another. Americas is still skating through tbe worst weather of a twelvemontb. If only Old Hoi would show his fsoe muoh else might be forgiven. WORLD WONDERS AT RESULTS. Tbe cfllcial statement comes from the beadqnarteis of tbe Japanese Gen eral Okn that in bis entire army, since May 0 last, only forty deaths have oc- onrred from disease During that time Osn. Oka has been in command of more than 150,WO men, and 24.642 have been at some time on the siok Us* *. That only forty ehonld have died is one of the most extraordinary faota In tbe history of military operations. In the same period Gen.Okn has lost 5,127 men killed and 21,080 wounded, yet only forty succumbed to disease Dnr- ing the civil war the Union forces lost 67,068 killed in action, while 199,720 died of disease. Beth American and European armies suffer heavier losses from disease than from actual fighting. In the civil war 43,013 Union soldiers died from wound", and here again comparison with the Japanese armies shows an immense margin in their fa vor. The Japanese surgeons perform few field operations, and, after first aid to the wounded, send them to the rear, where the chief dependence is on the reparative forees of nature. No state ment is given of how Gen. Oku’s med ical ofiloers treated the 24,643 sick Jap anese, bat tbe fact that the mortality was less than 2 per 1000 will astonish tbe most elaborately organized army midloal departments. Either tbe Jap anese soldiers bave marvelous consti tutions, or tbeir medieal officers .know some important things not' yet mas tered elsewhere.
