of the Florida and Alabama Land Oo„
between Wing and Faleo Junction, in

Shelby Hartley, Walter Clark and Thos
Dauphin, all white, were killed out
right, Their homes were in Walton
county, Florida. Warren Haskell,fire
man, had one leg out cfi and the other
broken; Dock Cook, eeotion foreman,
was slightly injured. The men were
tiding on the engine, when the tender
jumped the traok and struck a tree, de
molishing the loomottve.

the passing of a firm so long identified

for a half century has been synonymous
with the growth of the city and identi
fied with its every interest.

Wheatley desired to retire from tbe
firm at the head of whioh his name has

they boarded today. Both bad been

Fisher was 86 years old and Mr*.

been separated from her husband, a
blacksmith, for two years.
The condition of the furniture in the
room gave indications of a straggle.

caused by Fisher’s jealousy. They

Towanda, Pa., Feb. 7.—In court here
today Bigler Johnson pleaded guilty to
the charge that ho murdered his wife,
Maggie B. Johnson, and her niece. An-
nte Benjamin, 10 years eld, on Sept
18 last, and afterward burned their
bodies. t
The prisoner made his plea of guil
ty and signed the Indictment without
the faintest Indication of nervousness.
He Is 20 years old and his wife was
40. At the December term his older
brother, Charles Johnson, was convict
ed of first degree murder as an ac
cessory, aad is now waiting argument
on a new trial. His mother, Mrs.
Sophie Merritt, and hla slater and
brother, Nancy and Alanscm John
son, were put on trial for the same
crime today.
The five members of the family, It
Is charged, went to Maggie Johnson's
house one night and killed her and her
little girl with an ax, Bprlnkled the re
mains with kerosene and set the house
on fire.

Columbia, S. C., Feb. 7.—At Gold-
vllle, Newberry county, John Atkin
son, 60 years old, was shot and killed
by his son, John Atkinson, Jr., aged
about 20.
The elder Atkinson, it Is said, was
drinking and threatened the life of
his wife. He chased her from one
room to another, breaking down tbree
doors.
Finally tbe woman ran to tbe room
occupied by bar son and his wife. Tbe
son locked ths door and warned his
father not to enter. Paying no heed
to the warning, Atkinson knocked ths
door down. As he rushed at his
wife the son raised a shotgun and
klUed his father Instantly.
The young man has surrendered.
The killing oocurred Saturday night.
