General Stoessels at Colombo.
Colombo, Ceylon, Feb. 4.—General
Stoessels, former commander at Port
Arthur, and the Russian offloars and
those accompanying him, arrived- here
today from Japan by way of Shang
hai, on board the French line steam
er Auatrallen.
In an Interview with the correspon
dent of the Associated Press the gen
eral denied the statement fmbllshed to
the effect that Port Arthur was sur
rendered prematurely. He waa especial
ly indignant at the statements made
by a London newspaper Jan., 25,_in a
dispatch from Pekin that there was at
the time of the surrender 23,000 able-
bodied men in Port Arthur, capable of
making a sortie, hundreds of officers
all well nourished, plenty of ammuni
tion, the largest magazine being un
touched, and full to the roof, and' that
there was an ample supply of food for
thres months, even if no -fresh sup
plies were received. The general
characterized these statements as un-
Justled and not supported by facts.
Colonel Reese, who was among the
negotiators for the surrender of the
fortress, said:
"The garrison could not have held
out a moment longer, it would have
been murder. Only 15 roubles re
mained In the military treasury out of
1,500,000 at the commencement of the
siege. Four hundred men were dying
dally at the hospitals principally from
wounds and scurvy. General Kon-
dratenko was the hero of the hour."
General stoessels and others of his
party win trans-ship at Port Said for
Odessa.

Boiler of Locomotive of Westbound
Train Exploded and Hurled Thir
teen Coaches of an Eaatbound Train
from Side Track.
Whltesboro, N. Y., Feb. 4.—Judso
Warren B. Hooker, of Fredonto, N. Y.,
was among tho passengers Injured In
the New Central wreck here early to-
lay. He was severely bruised and cut
about the head and body. The ear In
which he was a passenger was thown
from the track and one side partially
torn away. The judge was wedged In
between the broken seats and was not
released for a considerable time.
Probably 25 ptber passengers were
Injured, and It is possible some dead
may be found In the wreck.
There were 13 cars In the Buffalo
special, every one of which left the
rails. Some of the cars ran 30 or 40
feet; the trucks were torn away and
the sides and bottoms of the cars
driven In.
A day coach was well Ailed with
passengers, among them being a num
ber of women, all of whom were se
verely cut by glass and splinters.
No relief train had reached the
scene up to 3:25 o'clock this morning,
and there were no doctors aboard
either of tbe trains. The railroad em
ployes and passengers worked hard to
release those Imprisoned In the de
railed cars, but progress was slow
owing to the manner In which the
cars were jumbled up.
As this train was passing t)\p Buffer
lo special, eastbouud, the boiler of the
locomotive of tbe westbound train ex
ploded. The force of the explosion
and the upheaval of the engine threw
the entire train of 13 cars composing
the special from the rails as If It had
been a string of toy coaches. The
rear Pullmans toppled into a ditch on
the side of the traok, but the forward
cars war# hurled Into an adjoining Held
at a distance varying from 10 to 40
feet. Several flew from the support
ing trucks, their ends being demol
ished by the Impact. The westbound
train did not leave tbe track.
Engineer Allen, who survived the
explosion of his engine, was carried
Into one of the sleeping cars of the
westbound train and given all the at
tention possible, but he died In a short
time.
Fireman Brennan was Instantly
killed. Hla body was thrown from
the cab to a snow bank alongside tho
track.
