AMERICUS. GA„ OEC. 27, 1906
This Congress will not confer cit
izenship on Porto Bicans. More
stand pat politics.
Georgia enjoyed the late festival
fully, and fever casualties and
tragedies than nsnal are recorded
With a crop of 36,000,000 bar
rels, and apples CO cents a peck
Oh, prosperity, what extortion is
perpetrted in tby name!
Americas eDjoyed a safe and
sane Christmas and is now glad
that it is over with, and not a fa
tality or casualty to record.
And Atlanta really got through
the holidays without a riot, for
which she is both pleased and hap
pily disappointed, no donbt.
It seems that the corporations
fear the voters if wages are not
raised, while congressmen likewise
fear the voters if wages are raised
This is a wastefal nation in many
ways, but it is far less wasteful
than it once was. For this we
hare science to thank. The chem
ist’s art has taught us many things
and has added and is adding
many millions toonr wealth. A
few years ago cotton seed was re
garded as worse than useless, flow
its by-products hare a value of
more than $50,000,000 annually.
It is the boast of the great pork
packers that nothing of the hog is
lost but the sqneal, and the oil re
finers lose nothing of the erode
product but the smell. The saw
dust that once was valueless has
become as valuable as the solid
lumber—in some cases more so,
just as the by- produots of ernde
oil are worth more than the re
fined oil.
We have learned to save hun
dreds of millions by utilizing ma
terial which we formerly threw
away. We make things of paper,
and we make paper of wood. We
make building stone as cheaply as
we make brick, and we hare ma
chinery that makes old clothes into
new cloth.
We have not yet learned the
household economy for which] the
French are famons, and which the
Germans understand. There is
too mnch waste in the kitchen, too
mnch extravagance in household
economics. We have not mastered
the science of cookery, and we
have not learned how to buy, to
utilize and to save. The science of
chemistry teaches the ntilizationof
every scrap of every element, and
great manufacturing concerns are
conducted on this principle. Bnt
the household with little money to
spend spends it like a drunken
prince and turns up its nose at the
small economics which mean not
only larger saving bnt better
living.
The department of cookery and
household economy is sadly neg
lected.
Mr. Bockefeller neither drinks
nor uses tobacco. Uncle Sam will
never be able to get anything Jut
of him without income and inheri
lance taxes.
A Yokohama gaper suggests
that Japan mpy not be getting its
share of American heiresses under
treaty rights. The Japs are pick
ing np even the art of hnmor.
Thfire comes the story of a
preacher who has ten sons, alt of
them in the ministry. What a
eropof dressing gowns and slip
pers that family harvested Tuesday

MEMBERS LIVING UPON MILEAGE
Congressmen who return home
for the holidays will ride on passes,
bnt when they return to Washing-
ton in January they will have to
pnt np the cash. But as they can
ride for 3 cents a mile, while the
Government allows them 20 cents
a mile as traveling expenses, most
of them will still be several hun
dred dollars ahead. It is even
claimed that some congressmen
have managed to live on their mile
age and save all of their salaries.
A residence lot for a home,
or a home itself, is the best of
all Christmas presents, even if
you have to give the lot this
year and the house later on.
We have some of the best in
Americus, which can be had
cheap for cash, or on easy
