Della Rogers, a very old negro wo
roan about town, was struck by a Sea
board passenger train at 5:10 o’clock
yesterday afternoon, receiving injuries
which will prove fatal, perhaps, If she
is not dead already.
The accident occurred near the For
rest street crossing as the shoolly train
was coming in.
The train, in charge of Engineer Hen
ry Horton, was running at slow speed
as it neared the depot. Without warn
ing, the old negress stepped upon
track right in front of the train.
The engine pilot caught the old wo-
man and tossod her from the rails.’
soon as the train could be stopped the
conductor and engineer went back and
examined the body. An inquest was
not deemed necessary.
No blame can possibly be attached
to the road for the accident, from
statements made by witnesses.

Fire among a lot of cotton bales
stored in the L* G. Council warehouse
was started Christmas night by a de
scending skyrocket set off by some
holiday reveler on Lee street, and but
for the effective work of tho firemen
might have raged fiercely.
The blaze was discovered at 7 o’clock
and the firemen, doubly vlgilanton ac
count of the explosion of fireworks all
over the city at tho time, were quickly
upon the scene and busy.
Two lines of hose were laid into the
atoruge department.
The fire was not given time to spread
to any great extent, so quickly was the
department upon the scene, and the
blaze was confined to a comparatively
small area. Only eighteen bales were
singed over or burned, nnd these not
badly.
The burning bales were quickly ex
tinguished and then removed to the
street for safety, where they could be
watched during the night. It was nec
essary to remove about fifty bales from
the warehouse, though only the number
mentioned were burned.
It was an exceedingly close call from
a dangerous fire.
It [is believed that $350 or $400 will
probably cover the loss although this
cannot be determined until the bales
arq picked and repacked. The quick
and elfcctlyo work of the department
in thus handling tho fire brought many
merited compliments.
The department has done double duty
during the holidays, having responded
to more than a dozen nlarms, while
losses have been light.
