El Reno, Okla., Dec. 28.—Race
feeling is at white heat and threats
of lynching are heard on every hand
as a result of an assault committed
on Mrs. T. Clifford, wife of a prom-
luent physician by a negro soldier of
the Twenty-fifth infantry.
Mrs. Clifford and her sister, Mrs.
H. Clarke, were attempting lo
pass the soldier, when he viciously
grabbed Mrs. Clifford around the
waist and threw her Into the street,
exclaiming, that the sidewalk belong
ed to hint.
Mrs. Clarke screamed for assist
ance, and the assailant lied, escap
ing before help arrived.
News of the attack spread rapidly, I
the entire police department reinforc
ed by several hundred men and boys,
searched the town and surrounding
country, but laler the chase was giv
en up.
The negro was In uniform and must'
return to the post or become a de
serter. Word was sent to Fort Reno
nnd all absenlecs noted.
Both Mrs. Clifford and her sister
arc positive they can Mentlfy the
man. and will go to Fort Reno and
attempt to.pick him from the soldiers
who were out of the po3t when the
assault occurred.
| Bishop A. Coke Smith Dead.
I Asheville, N. C.. Dec. 28.—Bishop
A. Coke Smith of the Methodist Epis
copal church, died Thursday night
after a lingering illness,, although
his death was unexpected. He was
77 years of age, having been horn in
Lyncburg, S. C., in 1849. He grad
uated from Wofford Colleye .Spar
tanburg, S. C., In 1873, and imme
diately joined the South Carolina con
ference. He was pastor of Cheraw,
Columbia, Charleston and other South
Carolina points. He was at differ
ent times a member of the faculties
of Vanderbilt and Wofford. While
pastor of Epworth church. Norflok,
Va., In 1902, he was elected bishop.
Two years ago he removed lo Ahse-
vllle for his health.

Tragedy at a Frolic—Suicide Near the
Town of Chlpley—Riot at Milton.
Pensacola, Fla., Dec. 29.—At his
home, near Chlpley, and alone in a
room, James Fairchild fired a bullet
through Ills brain, death being In
stant. His wife, in an adjoining
room, heard the shot and going Into
the room, found her husband on the
floor with the blood flowing from the
wound.

occurred Thursday night reached here

Fla., when Tom McDaniel, a young
man of good reputation, attended i
party at the home of a neighbor

fight ensued and McDaniel's throat

Gratified at Situation.
Tangier. Dec. 29.—The members
of the diplomatic corps are very much
gratified at the Improvement in the
situation here. The success, of War
Minister Gabbas has been more mark
ed than they believed possible. The

Watushl, of Japan, enroute home
from Mexico to report to his govern
ment on the conditions of Japanese

Serious Trouble Likely.
Chicago. Dec. 28.—The probabil
ity of serious trouble between the
42 western railroads and their em
ployees who have demanded a 15 per
cent increase In wages became more
likely Thursday. The managers ot
the roads affected met and decided
lhat no action would be taken until
the trainmen made fresh overtures.
Meanwhile representatives of the
Brotherhood of locomotive Engineers
nnd the Brotherhood of locomotive
Firemen from each of the roads, met
to determine on their demands. The
meeting broke up with the threat
that "something would be doing pret
ty quick if they were not recognized."

New York, Dec. 29.—It has been
announced at tho district attorney’s
office that the trial of Harry K. Thaw
for the murder of Stanford White,
will lake place In the criminal branch
of the supreme court before Justice
Greenhaum. The trial Is scheduled
to take place on Jan. 21st.

Macon. Ga., Dec. 29.—Frank Bas
sett, a young while man at La-
Grange, Ga.. cammltted suicide by
cutting his throat. A physician
