the troops at the fort had been call
ed, refused to discuss the case.
"I am growing tired of this busi
ness." he said. “Every time, a crime
Is committed'it is laid to the negro
soldiers. I won’t tell anything about
what has been done further than to
say that we are doing all possible to
aid the police capture the guilty per
sons.”
Ill concealed excitement and intense
racial feeling still prevails here over
the assault upon Mm. T. S. Clifford,
wife of a prominent physician, by a
negro.
While Major Penrose declines to
discuss the affair. It Is understood
that all the regulars have been ac
counted for and the Insult was given
either by a discharged soldier or a
negro civilian who might have pur
chased a cast-off uniform. It Is un
derstood arrests are to be made soon
but that If possible the fact will'be
kept secret In order to avoid proba
ble mob violence.
Major Penrose refused to make any
statement regarding a report that he
has a clew to the Identity, and where
abouts of the person believed to be
discharged soldier of the Twenty-
fifth Infantry, who shot and seriously
wounded Captain Edgar B. Macklln

however, that he has secured defin
ite Information and’ that the assail
ant will be In custody soon.
Major Penrose said that Captain
Macklln's condition Is showing much
Improvement, though It probably will
require many weeks to restore his
health.
The wrecks ot the two trains has
been cleared sufficiently to permit
traffic being resumed. No further
deaths have been reported among the
