AMERICUS. GA..MARCH. 8. 1907,
Don't be afraid to “boost" Americus,
Talk up your town. That'* the
to help it along.
As a citizens your first duty is to
Amorleus. Do not forgot that.
Candidly, now, are you doing nil
you con to help Americus along?
Ily pulling all together Americus
should bo nblo to land somo new
industries.
Thore are many good things you can
say about Amorleus, Don't bo afraid
to say them?
Whenever you write to a friend, or a
business acquaintance, put In a few
good words for Americus.
There is one class of mankind that is
really open to public scorn. It is tho
class tnst knocks its home town.
What has become of Beorotary Taft?
If he is to be tho presidential legatccihe
must not even suffer a temporary
eclipse.
"Tho centralization of power scorns
to be the ono great effort of the Roose
velt administration" says the Columbua
Knqulrer-Sun.
have a large, now,
y. brick kotol. A forward
■top that tells the a to nr again of South
Georgia's progress,
Atlanta has sprung a new sensation.
Its height bureau alleges that tho L. A
N. la trying to destroy the Btate road
by depressing business, Ton to one
there’s nothing In It.
The late 'ypeakoi of tbo Alabama
llduse, W. L. Martin, positively refus
ed to be called “Colonel," He had
earned no military title and did not
a* • ‘ l-'jaors. Applying this test
ho\t many Georgia Colonels would be
leftt
Don't forget that a billion dollar
congress moans a billion dollars
assessed upon the people. There la no
excuse for extravagance, waste,
subsidies on' tho part of the general
govortmrnt. Tbo people fbot the bills,
not tho congressmen.
“You can be seventy-five per cent, wrong and still make money in
Manhattan real estate."
This Is what Felix Isenian, who has made soveral fortunes In realty
in New York city, says.
His dictum applies with equal force to Amorleus real estate.
Every man who has invested In real estate In this city In the past
year or two has mado money out of if.
We cun go even further than Iseman and declare that you cannot
go wrong when you buy Americus realty.
In a city that Is thriving, growing, and has a future like Americus,
realty is not only one of the safest, hut It is also one of the most
remunerative investments that one can make.
It Is not like putting your money into ordinary investments.
Savings banks only pay four per cent, per annum, at the best.
Americus real estate Is apt to, in fact In several cases has, pay 25 to 50
per cent. In a year.
You take no chances alien you buy ground here, improved or
otherwise. There is a sure, healthful development going on continuously
that tells steadily for the betterment of values of ail classes of prop
erty.
The percentage of profits will vary, according to the judgment dis
played in purchasing. Ono piece of property will advance In value
more rapidly than another. But almost every piece of property in the
city is going ahead and next year will he worth more than It Is today,
and tho year after that it will sell for more than It does twelve
months hence.
Tho man or woman who has faith In Americus Is building on a safe
foundation. This city has had its set-backs, but they are in the past. It
Is built on the solid rock of conservatism now, but it is a conservatism
that is_ not old-fogylsm, but simply the application of safe principles
of business in a communty whoso superb location, magnificent back
country, nnd courageous enterprise insure Its growth In business, popu
lation nnd wealth.
We nro not predicting any "boom" for Americus. The city does
not want one, will not work for one, would prefer not to have one. A
"boom” is too often n "boomerang."
But we do predict a continued growth In Its business, a steady ex-
pansion of its prosperity, a broadening of opportunities for its citizens
to make money, and, what Is more, an increase In the other advant
ages it offers home-seekers that must tell materially in the swelling of
Its population by bringing hero people of a most desirable class.
Havo confidence in Americus. It Is entitled todt nnd its future will
more than Justify It.
ROOSEVELT AS A TRUST BUSTER
There is a general inclination among
Democratic papora to aneer at ltoose-
volt ns a “trust buster." The fooling
of opposition editors is that the Presi
dent lias failed to make good along
this line, that the trusts, dosplto the
wioldtng of the big stick, aro still as
numerous, us active, and as gouging as
ever. Whether they will over be
brought undor effective control while
tho Republican party Is in power at
Washington is doubtful. A political
party cannot, or will not, slap its most
powerful friends in tho face, and no
ono questions that the trusts look with
a favoring eye on the G. O. P., its lead
ers and its policies,
The New York Times regards Roose
velt as a capital grand stand player
along the antl-truat lino. While it does
not accuso tbo President of gross in
sincerity. of any desire to'lntentionally
mislead the public or deceive it as to
hit real sentiments, It does not hesitate
to say that his course is erratic and un
productive of very definite results.
There is too much of the glare of the
red light about the White House per
formances, tooovidenta desire to poso
in a spectacular fashion, too much
straining after effects.
The Times, which no one will accuso
of being sensational or unjust In Its
editorial management, aays;
"Thta i* the Roosevelt* way. Look
around until you find some abuse,
picture it forth to the people as a scaly
monster beyond tho strength of the
States to control, belabor it until you
have attracted attention and made
yourself popular as a deliverer of the
enslaved, then rush to Congress with
tho suggestion of a bill—tbo vaguer
the suggestion is tbo safer it will be—
to draw the tooth of the monster and
tie bis legs. Thon make a prodigious
fuss over your achievement in speech
and writing and leave the lawmaking
body to work out the statutory solu
tion. If the legislators raise t'onstl-
tutional objections, denounce them as
traitors and the slaves of the Trusts.
Few practical reforms are thus achiev
ed, but It is aflrst-rateWay toniake
political Capital.”

After twenty years of active news-
paper servico In Americus, Mrs.
Marie L. Myrick has laid down the
pen and retired from the ranks of
professional journalism. Falling
health for some months past has
warned her of the necessity ot this,
but tho sense ot duty to Americus has
led her to postpone the hour of sup
render as long as possible. With
sorrowful heart, but with the proud
satisfaction of knowing that she has
labored zealously and successfully for
the upbuilding ot the city of her adop
tion and has been an Important fac
tor In Its development, she has sur
rendered tbe control of the Times-
Recorder Into other hands.
It Is not Mrs. Myriek's Intention to
withdraw from Americus. Here,
where her home lias bcon for so long
a time, she will remain, surrounded
by her loyal friends. It Is well that
after so long an enlistment In tho
arduous duties of newspaper life she
should enjoy a well-earned rest She
has stood the strain of munagoment ot
a dally newspaper here during a long
term of business depression, haB seen
that period ot doubt and anxiety give
way to one of confldenco and bound
ing hope, and now, when all Is bright
for Americus, when It reems to bo
entering upon Its palmiest days,
when its rapid progress Is practically
assured, like a veteran soldier who
has bravely faced the enemy In battle
after battle, she feels that she can
withdraw from the arena of active
business life, knowing that her work
has been well done, that her labors
havo borne fruit, that tho city she
loves is once more on the high road
of prosperity, and that from the
vnntagc ground of honorublo retire
ment she can watch its future growth
without the necessity of being active
ly engaged In Its affairs.
No one can question Mrs. Myriek's
devotion to Americus, or her intense
loyalty to it in times when Its very
existence, to some, seemed threat
ened. Thera Is no abatement of this
sentiment ou, her part, no desire to
shirk any burden that might belong
to her. Without her knowledge. It
can bo said for her that as long as
lifo remains Americus and its people
will hold tho warmest spot In her af
fections. Here, where she cast in
her lot nearly a quarter of a century
ago, when Americus was a struggling
town with great aspirations, but lit
tle hopes ot their realization, she will
remain until the shadows ot life’s
last day close about her. The best
wishes of all ot tbe citizens of
Americus will be with her under the
new conditions ot her life.
Many years ot comfort and happi
