VISITS THE CONVICT CAMP
A Committee Prom the Grand Jury Inspects the
Zebras.
The Investigation of Sumter's con
vict system at the hands of the grand
jury now in session Is going to be
very thorough and complete. In hts
charge to that body at the opening of
tbe Session Judge A. Littlejohn was
quite emphatic thereupon.
He told tbe grand Jury to Investi
gate tbe camps; to Investigate the
management of convicts; and more
over, to Investigate the numerous
wholesale escapes made recently.
Probably twenty or thirty convicts,
worth $400 each 'to the count/ as
laborers, are in the woods.
Tbe wholesale escapes effected du
ring the year reflects severely upon the
county, to say nothing of the great
financial loss sustained, running high
Into the thousands of dollars. The
grand jury will find out who was re
sponsible therefor. .
To this end a committee of eight
grand jurors drove in buggtes yester
day to the single camp, out near
Myrtle Springs, to pursue their In-
vestlgatipns. Other evidence besides
that of the convicts will be heard to
day before that body.
When the grand Jury mqkes its
recommendations prior to the adjourn'
mentof court, tbe Investigation of the
convict system will be thoroughly set
forth therein.
