Work on the offices to be used by the Superintendent of the Seaboard'
flfth division and hit corps of clerks and other assistants It progressing radldly
under the directions left by Supt. Grimshaw, who went over to Montgomery
from Americas, yesterday.
The offices will all be In good shape before August 1 when the Suporin
to nilent and bis force begin their occupancy.
Ten years ago the Superintendent of the old Geocgla & Alabama was located
at Americus. The people of Americus well remember the removal to Sayan
naft and the strenuons efforts that were put forth to retain them here. Americas
then, as now, was the best located point on the long stretch of line between
Savannah and Montgomery for the location ot the Superintendent and his
force. It was the logical point lor their location and it was inevitable that
sooner or later they would return to this point.
Savannah, as might be expected, is endeavoring to retain the fotee in that
city, bat it seems to be a loregone conclusion that the efforts there will be un
successful. The Seaboard must be operated to the best advantage possible, and
it stands to rAson that city midway on the line Is far better suited for the sup
•rintendent's location than one atan extreme oastern point. Tho same princl.
pal prevails as to the shops. Americus is the natural point for them, the point
w here they are meet available for the repair construction work on this
division..
