NEW YORK, August 17.—Their
•ars wide open for any news hear
ing on the Presidential situation, Re
publicans are watching every move
in. the political game with a degress
oil interest that national conventlo.
Taft's visit to the President on last
Tuesday, the conference with the
party leaders, including Woodruff and
Barnes of this State, that had pre-
aeded It and the announcement that
the Administration’s policies as de
veloped up to date are to he set forth
in speeches which the Secretary of
War will deliver throughout the West,
Beginning with the one in Columbus
on Mouday, were topics that were
discussed everywhere.
A member of the Republican Club,
commenting on the Interest taken
by members of the party generally,
said he could not remember when it
ever was more keen, short of the ac
tual campaign fight.
"Whatever may be done lu the
way of planning to deliver the New
Tork delegation to Taft," said the
member of tho Republican Club,
“there need he no fear of a snap
judgment The party Interest In ev
erything connected with the Presi
dential situation Is too keen for that.”
Tuft Is Teddy's Mouthpiece.
There was a widespread apprecia
tion of the fact that the forthcoming
Taft speeches will be really Roosevelt
speeches, the President speaking to
the country through the Secretary of
War. it was said the Interest In the
Taft declarations would not be less
on that account, although more than
one Republican admitted that he
would like to hear what Taft, as t
candidate for tho Presidential nomi
nation, had to say on his own ac
count.
A rcjmrt from Washington that the
Secretary had gone to work at once
preparing his Columbus speech was
received with a great deal of reserve,
few Republicans having any doubt
that the speech, down to every im-
pprtant detail, as well as those that
are to follow It In Kentucky and Mis
aourl and further West, had been gone
over carefully by the President, Sec
retary Root and Secretary Taft.
Until recently not a few Republi
cans In this city had an Idea that
Cortelyou, and not Taft, was Roose
velt's real choice for the nomination.
That view has been dispelled practi
cally by the happenings of the last
week, and it Is now taken for grant
ed generally that the President In
tends to exert all his influence
Bring about the nomination of Taft,
reserving the right to shift to a dif
ferent candidate only in event of the
opposition to tho Secretary of War
proving too great to be overcome.
. What President Roosevelt would
do when It became clear to him that
the Republicans of his own State—
New York—were not to he delivered
tt> the Ohio candidate furnished a
fertile field for conjecture. On tills
point there was an extremely unani
mous conviction that New York Re
publicans would be found lit the pro
per time demanding the nomination
it Governor Hughes for President, and
resenting any and all attempts to
swing the State delegation from him.
Intimations were general that
Woodruff, If he tried to commit the
State organization for Taft or any
other candidate except Hughes, would,
discover that he had tackled a Job
far beyond his strength, and not to
he compassed by any Influences which
he might represent.
Fronl the time when the memory
of man runs not to the contrary the
lluguenln Plantation barbecue has
delighted the friends of the superin
tendent and hundreds of faithful col
ored employes.
And Mr. Jones has made no excep
tion of this time honored rule.
A party of twenty gentlemen, sum
moned t otbe feast royal, went to
Hiigtionln by the noon rtaln yester
day, meeting there an even larger
number from the surrounding plan
tations, many fair ladles gracing the
occasion.
The feast—It could not In justice
he called a dinner, was spread at the
station, and was in readiness when
the train arrived.
Mrs. Jones, a charming and grac
ious hostess always, assisted In dis
pensing this open handed hospital
ity.
Barbecued pigs, lambs, kid and
barbecued chickens in prodigal abun
dance was spread upon the long ta
bles, flanked by delicious cakes and
other viands equally tempting.
No similar scene of ante-bellum
days could have surpassed this one.
In a grove, a half mile away, a
dinner equally as sumptuous was
spread by Mr. Jones for the hundreds
of colored people on the plantation.
It was indeed a season of rejoicing,
for tho crops are abundant and
prosperity prevails In that favored
region. Mr. Jones has the Huguenln
plantation of ten thousand acres, be
sides his own farms of half that
area, and the crops upon nil are
truly magnificent.
As a happy flnnle, when the ndieus
were said, Col. Crawford Wheatley
In hts happiest vlen expressed the
gratitude of the ussemblcd guests to
their host and hostess, although am
ple appreciation had been fully evi
denced during the preceding half
houK
It was indeed a royal occasion in
that realm of peace, plenty and un
exampled prosperity.

WASHINGTON, August 17.—There
Is a strong Impression here that Sec
retary of State Root will propose to
President Diaz, of Mexico, that he
unite with the United States in Ini
tiating a conference of American
states which shall have for its ob
ject the framing of n treaty designed
to insure the permanent peace of the
Western hemisphere.
Central American diplomats who
have remained In Washington
throughout the heated term are now-
leaving, either for fall visits to their
own countries or for Northern
coast resorts. For the last six
weeks a series of conferences have
been lu progress with Mr. Bacon, and
a general understanding has been
reached. Mr. Bacon has gone to the
home of Secretary Root, at Utica, N.
Y., for the purpose of informing him
of the trend of the conferences pnd
the decision of the diplomats.

There develops no division of opinion
as to the advisability of securing a
peace pact for the Central and South
Americans, but the countries Indivi
dually shrink from taking tho initial
step Because of the fear of being
branded as cowardly and fearful of
their neighbors.
Neither the United States nor Mex
ico feels restraint on such grounds,
and both countries are sincere in
wishing from altruistic and unselfish
reasons for permanent peace on the
continent.
Mr. Root announces a postponment
of the time of his visit to Mexico un
til nearly the first of October. The
object of the delay Is to permit of
exchanges with Mexico, so that a
much better groundwork can be laid
for the verbal exchanges at the City
of Mexico.
With the proper foundation laid
the announcement of such a confer
ence as our Latln-Amerlcnn neigh
hors are willing to assent to Is ex
pected to be one of the triumphal fea
tures of Mr. Root's vlst to Mexico.
Secretary Bacon will tell Secretary
Root that the South American coun
tries are favorable to the proposed
peace compact without a single ex
ception. Most of them have enjoyed
eras of peace within their borders.
They believe that continuance of
disorders In Central America gives
all the southern half of this hemi
sphere an unsavory and undesirable
reputation and proves a handicap to
Its development, Immigration and In
vestments.
On Wednesday next, 21st, each of
the twenty-seven school districts of
Sumter county will elect n hoard of
trustees, who will arrange the af
fairs of their respective schools dur
ing the ensuing term. Three trus
tees will be elected in each district,
making a total of elghty-one to be
named by the voters in this election.
The trustees are selected for one,
two and three years, respectively.
Where there is a voting precinct in
the district, such as Amerlcus, Plains,
Lealt*, Andersonville, etc., the elec
tion will be held there, and where
there are no such precincts, the bal
lots will be cast at the school houses.
The election of school trustees Is
an Important one, and the voters
should see to it on next Wednesday
that capable men are chosen to this
position.
OCILLA A WINNER IN

Secretary Cook Decides in Favor
of That Town.
Col. W. A. Dodson returned yester
day Irom Atlanta, where as attorney
In the case he has been watching the
contest between Ocilla and Irwlnvllle
over the removal of the Irwin couniy
courthouse. Secretary of State Cook
decided the disputed county seat case
Irwin county in favor of Ocilla and
against Irwlnvllle. Ocilla got a
large majority of the votes in the
election, but Irwlnvllle claimed that
there was fraud and that a number of
ballots favorable to that place were
thrown out illegally. The votes were
gone over in detail, and every feature
of the case was rehearsed before Sec
retary Cook. The hearing had been
going on since Tuesday.

Allen Floyd is the Deal Jackson of

a thrifty and successful negro farm

diamond of Dougherty. But Floyd
gets there on general results, and that
really Is what counts. Yesterday he
marketed at L. G. Council's ware
house his first hale of the new crop.
It was of excellent quality and was
sold by Mr. Council at a record price,
13*4 cents, netting Floyd $57.63, a
pretty stiff figure for a cotton bale.
Floyd operates a good sized six mule
