THE AMExICt'S W» P.KLY TIMES-RECORDER. FRIDAY. AUGUST a3, 1907, I I0TAL OF 140 BALES CAME INDURING DAY. first Saturday of Season a Good One, fLEEGY TIDE ROLLS RAPIDLY HERE With $65 as the Average Value Per Bale-Cotton Season Opens In Americus Most Auspi ciously. One hundred mid forty hales cot ton made up yesterday's receipts at Americus warehouses, a very good day’s business Indeed for the season. Friday's receipts were 35 bales, and alcrady there Is a total of more than 200 new bales to our credit here. Yesterday’s receipts—MO bales— was a trifle larger than expected, in view of the rainy days of the past week, which delayed picking. Warehousemen were well pleased with the day’s business. The new cotton is of excellent qual ity and readily brings thirteen cents in Americus. The greater portion of that brought in yesterday sold for 13 eepts, a splendid price which netted the fortunate owner $65 for a 500 pound bale. All of yesterday’s bales were sold, one buyer alone taking 70 bales. Even this number of bales, at the top notch price, put more than $S,000 at new cotton money in circulation in Americus. The cotton season thus opens aus piciously, and a week hence the fleecy tide will be rolling high. A fair es timate for this week will be 1,200 to 1,500 bales, provided the weather re mains fair and farmers have a chance to pick the staple. Fields about Americus are white with open cotton, and with the price at 13 cents it will be rushed to mar ket as rapidly as possible. Tutt’sPills This popular remedy never falls to effectually cure Oyspepsia, Constipation, Sick Headache, Biliousness And ALL DISEASES arising from a Torpid Liver and Bad Digestion The natural result is good appetite and solid flesh. Dose small; elegant* ly sugarcoated and easy to swallow. Take No Substitute. LETTER TO TV. D. BAILEY, Americas, Georgia. Dear Sir: Here's a tale with a pplnt to It. Florida Is the hardest state in the Union for paint. Gilmore & Davis Co., Tallahassee, Florida, think they know what paint oan do In their climate; they’ve been painting for 35 years, D^voe ten years; and they say Devoe wears 10 years—their words are: “Buildings we painted Devoe 10 years ago are In good condition of paint today.” They also say lead-and-oll wears only one year there—Devoe ten years! Ten years Is a long lifetime for paint in Florida—longer than 20 in Kalnte, We don’t dare say either is true as a general fact In those States; hut there are general instances. If we should call the cost of Devoe lb Florida half the usual cost of paint, it would be too much;we sup pose it's about one-third; there Is so much trash there—the costliest paint is the worst, and the worst Is the cost liest everywhere. YourB truly, ,’B F. W. DEVOE & CO. AmericuB Construction Co. sell our paint. Cobb of the court of ordinary returned yesterday from Atlanta where he went recently to look after the pensions of thirteen vet erans here. These were the new ones whose names were last added to the rolls In Sumter, and who were not paid then because the appropia- tlon was' not sufficient. The legisla ture recently voted the necessary In crease, and Capt. Cobb at once went up and secured the amount due the thirteen unpaid pensioners in Ameri cus—$780. AMERIGUSi-FINESr AS FARMERS Several Going from Americus to the Tobacco Lands of South Georgia ’ -Two Members Police Force Going. The “Americus Colony” down In Decatur county, where are located several of the largest tobacco farms iu the world, Is to be further recruit ed a month hence when a half dozen men here will go to the farms to take desirable positions. These will go as superintendents, and the salary Is inviting. Police Officers Willis and West brook, two of the best men on the Americus force, will go to Amsterdam early in October where, it Is said, they have already ncepted positions. Besides these two, several exper ienced farmers near Americus, who understand Intensive agriculture and the management of labor, have also accepted positions ranging from $75 per month up, besides a big bonus promised by the company. This “bonus” Is for any excess crop made over the average, and of ten amounts to even more than the annual salary earned. Already there are a half dozen Americus people thus employed by the tobacco people at good salaries, and all are well pleased. The com pany furnishes a residence, free of cost, to each family and living ex penses are not even as great as here. The country Is very similar to this; high, rolling, and healthful. Tobacco culture there is carried on in all its perfection. The company has millions of capital and Its out put Is enormous. Hundreds of peo ple are given employment at profitable wages, women and children alike earning excellent pay. These work In the factories, hand ling the cured tobacco. The commun ity Is an excellent one and the very- best order prevails there. Various expedients are being resort ed to, It Is said, for the purpose of getting around the state prohibition law. A number of express agents In various sections of the state have re ceived letters from a Richmond, Va., liquor dealer, asking them to act as agents for this Arm for the sale and delivery of liquors after the prohibi tion law goe3 Into effect. The letter is very artfully worded and offers a bonus of $1 for the name of each person who uses liquors from the firm. The $1 Is payable upon the receipt of the first order. In Americus the same reliable and safe old tiger will probab ly get busy again. Southern Railway Case.
