NINE BALES IS LOAD
PUT ON WAGON
A PrimeTen Cents Cigar for 5 Cents
"There 1b the best argument possi
ble In favor of good roads In Sumter
county,” said a farmer yesterday, os
a wagon drawn by four mule3 and pil
ed high with nine bales of cotton, stop
ped atCouncil'sWarehouse. The wagon
came from the T. B. Hooks planta
tion, six miles away, and the nine
bales, each of which weighed over
500 poundes, was no load for the mt|le-
tical quartette. A total weight of
probably 5,000 pounds over six miles
of Sumter county road seems rather
unusual, and a few years ago would
have been an Impossibility. Then,
Mr. Hooks sent six bales as a load,
and six mules pulled it here over one
pi the worst roads In tbs county.
Now these six miles are smooth and
even, as evidenced by the load of
cotton brought In yesterday.

Americus Is a city of handsome res
idences, stntely mansions and well
kept lawns that go to make up a
"city beautiful.” The Tlmes-Record-
er has already presented to Its read
ers many handsome engravings of
these Ideal homes, and today pre
sents two pretty ones on Rees Park,
.1 delightful residence locality, and
about which cluster many of the hand
somest residences in the city. Rees
Park should be to Americus what
Inman Park In to Atlanta, and this
enn'.d b? dene easily with the improve
ment of the park property. The build
ing of other homes in that locality
should snp an Impetus to the
city council to improve Rees Park,
and make of it an ideal pleasure

LONDON”, August 24.—America is
about to receive a visit from a most
Interesting character in the person
of the bishop of London, Rev. Dr. A.
F. AV. Ingram, who Is to leave Eng
land next week to present to the old
Bruton parish church at Williams
burg, jVa., the second odlest church
In America, the Bible King Edward
has given It In connection with the
Jamestown tercentenary celebration,
The high position occupied by Bish
op Ingram in the church world is suf
ficient In Itself to attract atttentlon.
To be a bishop, at a compartlrely
early age, of the world's metropolis,
In direct line of succession to the arch-
blshroprlc of Canterbury, the highest
ecclesiastical honor In Great Brit
ton's gift, with riches and worldy pow
er at his command, Is in itself no
small distinction.
But from the human interest point
of view the romance of the youthful
bishop’s life Is of far more Interest
than the story of his career In the
church.
It was two years ago that the bish
op's romance came to a focus, when
it was announced that Lady Alvlca
Duncombe, the youngest of the four
famous beauties, daughters of the
Earl of Favershaw, was to become
hts bride. All London was startled.
The twenty-four. Her delicate charm
has been fostered in an environment
of softest luxury. The man she had
chosen was known as the "slum
1 bishop" and dwelt among the masses
In the most laborious diocese In Eng
land. It would mean self immola
tion, her friends said.
But the affair was a love match.
Lady Alvlca, always of a serious cast
of thought, entered heart and soul
into the pisbop’s plans. But three
months after the engagement was an
nounced It was abruptly broken off.
Whether her courage faltered or
whatever Interfered none dared
ask. But with the wedding day al
ready In view, the beauty, who had
declined an Earl for his sake, refused
to marry her churchman’ lover.
The bishop, stunned by the blow]
which had crumbled his happiness, I
went abroad. He returned a changed
man. He loved and lost Only his
work for the masses remained for
him. Since then he has been known
as “the working bishop,” his youth
ful buoyancy gone but his face and
bearing spirited and ennobled by his |
steady devotion to his life work.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA., Aug

hands, the Btirring strains of martial
music, and the huzzas of enthusiastic
crowds, Secretary Taft reached this
ciy today for the purpose Of speaking
at the formal opening of the Republi
can state campaign. The speech
making takes place tonight In Con
vention hall, Igit a parade, reception
and other features made the entire
day one of Interest.
Secretary Taft was met nt the de
pot by a special reception committee
and escorted to the Threadgill hotel,
where an informal reception was
held, hundreds of Republicans calling
to shake him by the hand.

people from the surrounding country |

the candidates for state office.
Oklahoma City expected a big crowd

With doers sealed tight and spid-
, Ci-s spinning webs over the keyhole,
the office of Western Union In Ameri
cus Is as quiet as a country cemetery.
The doors were shut yesterday by
ordof cf the company atui keys
turn..: over to tile chief of police.
Chief Feagln, therefore, Is custodian
of the Western Union office here, and
will hold down the job of carrying the
keys until the company sends an op
erator to relieve him.
Tills unexpected denouement In the
strike Situation came yesterday, and
caused no little surprise In local cir-
cl s telegraphic.
"Get to work or else get out" Is
the slogan of the company.
Tills peremptory order ha3 gone
"down the line" very generally, and
where the striking operators do not
see lit to return to work the ffiffees
are either shut up, or some other op
erator Is placed In charge there.
The order to close the Americus
office was received-over the long dis
tance 'pho'ne yesterday by Manager
Clark, who was merely Instructed to
shut up shop and give the keys to
the chief of police. This he did very
promptly.
But tills has been the situation,
practically, for two weeks.
Manager Clark states that lie has
never refused to accept a message,
though always subject to Indefinite
delay." This, he states,' wns his In
struction from the superintendent.
.'.iauugvi- Clark says that he has
never "struck" in the full sense of
the word. Ho Is classed a manager,
and not an operator, and during the
two weeks of the strike has icmalned
on duty during office hours, hut hand
ling little ,lf any business.
,Supt. Dillon, who sent thq closing
up order, was In Albany at the time.
A new operator Is being put In charge
there, and the Albany office will be
opened for business.
It Is hoped the Americus office may
be opened as well.
The cotton business and other com
mercial linos as well, are alnio. t rtag-
f.atfd by the strike, and In business
circles generally the wish is fervently
expressed thtt the companies can suc
cessfully grapple with the situation
and resume business.
Nothing has happened to the Pos
tal office here as yet, where the strike
Is still on, though this too, may be
opened up again shortly.
Lonnie Green, who though I
black to realy greener than his
name would Indicate, was ac
tually foolish enough to sidestep the [
chalngang yesterday. Green sudden
ly dodged into a dense jungle and sped I
away like a deer. The guard did not
shoot him, but In live minutes three
bloodhounds, the real article, - were
In Green’s wake and ten minutes later
had him up a tree. As this was his
second break he was given the strap
pretty freely, and in future will wear
a steel pick as an ankiet. Supt. Pas- |
chal has a pack of real bloodhounds
now that render the escape of convicts |
well nigh impossible.
