Informed a n,umber of his close poll- not desire a second term in his pres-
tlcal friends of his intention to oppose ent office, believing that with his pro-
Stevtf Clay before the next legislature mises to the people redeemed his
for the United States senatorship, and
plans were all laid to that end.
It Is the general Impression in well
Informed circles here that Watson
will give his great Influence to Smith
in the senatorial race.
Watson has practically expressed
his preference for Smith in opposi
tion to Clay, and it is currently be
lieved that this and other political
matters were discussed and finally
settled at the conference between the
governor and Watson at Thomson to
day.
Gov. Smith, it is known, has inti
mated parlor to this close political
advisers that he hoped to put his
entire "reform program” through at
the next session of the legislature, so
real work as Governor will have been
completed.
He aspires to carry on this work at
Washington, his friends say, and If
elected to the Senate would Join forces
with La Follete and other so called
radicals In that body.
The governor’s speech to the farm
ers of Hancock county is looked upon
as the first gun In bis senatorial fight.
Other speeches during the next year
will further enunlcate bis policy, and,
his adherents here claim, strengthen
bis hold on the people, and especially
on the agricultural classes.'
It Is generally understood that Tom
Watson will give his Influence and
the support of the populist party to
Tom Hardwick for the governorship.

GEO. D. WHEATLEY.
Americas, Ga.
ATLANTA, Sept. 11.—(Special.)—
Gov. Smith and his advisers, after !
thorough consideration of the ques
tions Involved, have, it is stated, de
cided to atack the validity of the four- 1
teenth amendment to the Constitution
in the event of litigation in the Fed- j
eral courts growing out of the re
duction in railroad passenger or
freight rates.
Many Southern lawyers have main- 1

amendment to the Constitution

In a recent issue of the Jeffersonian
Tom Watson took his position and,
in fact, has for some time insisted
that at the earliest' legitimate oppor
tunity the legality of the amendment
should be,stacked.
The fatt that Gov. Smith visited
Watson at his home at Thomson, re
turning to Atlanta, has led to the con
jecture that .the governor wished to
talk over this feature' 1 of the railroad
situation with him.
Considerable gossip has been creat

visit to Watson, and it is the impres
sion that the Georgia press for the
next few days will be full of conjec
tures as to the trend of their conver

it is generally accepted as a fact that
