Manufacturers will be formally open
ed In the house of representatives

facturers of New England and others

and from England, Belgium, Germany

In attendance, the delegates represent
ing an aggregate capital estimated at

In addition to the spinners, all of
the important cotton growers’ organi
zations and industries allied with the
production, manufacture or sale of
cotton will be represented, including
the Southern Cotton association, the
Farmers' union and the Interstate
Cotton Seed Crushers' association.
The conference will remain in ses
sion through Tuesday and Wednes
day. Among the subjects slated for
discussion are: Advantages of sou
thern states of America for cotton
cotton growing; closer relations be
tween growers and spinners; seed
selection; improved ginning and com
pressing; uniformity of bales, coun
try damages; warehouseing; trans
portation; insurance; uniform classi
fication; contracts of exchanges, equi
table tare.
The buying net weight; speculation;
stability of price; statictics and gov
ernment crop reports, and permanent
organization will also be discussed.
WILL NEGROES DEFEAT TAFT.
The New York Press, a stalwart De
publican paper, expresses the opinion
that a Democrat will be elected Pres
ident next year If Taft Is made the
Republican nominee, and this opinion
It proceeds to support with some
figuring.
It shows that with Oklahoma there
will he 4S3 electoral votes next year
of which 242 will bo needed to elect.
The South, including Oklahoma, has
176 of these votes, and all of them
may he conceded to the Democrats if
Taft Is nominated, which leaves CG
votes to be gained 111 the North.
The Press is convinced that Nqw Jer
sey will go as New York goes, and
Mr. Taft cannot carry either of these
States. New York has 39 electoral
votes and New Jersey 12, making a
total of 51, which, added to 176, gives
227 electoral votes, only 15 less than
are needed to elect. In reply to Its
own question: Where are these votes
to be ohtalnd, the Press says:
“Well, Indiana has them, and In In
diana there Is a very largo voting
population that Is black. Ohio has
them, with nine more to boot. And
In Ohio not only Is there a large col
ored vote, hut there are factlonnl hat
reds and warrings, '.ho disastrous
consequences of which we expect to
see Illuminated vividly when the bal
lots are counted In the race between
Burton and Johnson for Mayor of
Cleveland.
Then there Is the Pacific Coast,
where people have been highly ex
cited by the Asiatic attitude of the
administration and where the tariff
views of Mr. Taft are denounced by
the Republican voters and their news
papers. The Pacific coast has several
more than enough electoral votes to
span that margin of the needed fll-
teen."
This Is Interesting so far as It goes,
but It Is predicted on the belief that
the negro Republican vote In the
North will be cast against Taft be
cause he stood by President Roose
velt In the Brownsville affair, lint
there are probably not many Repub
licans who are afraid of the negroes
breaking away from their party next
year if Taft Is the presidential nom
inee.
It is quite certain that Bryan and
other Democrats are not basing any
hopes upon the defection of negro
voters In the North.
However, the New York Press ad
heres to the belief that something
must be done to conciliate the negro
voters If a Republican Is to be elected
next year. The G. O. P. must appease
the end of Its tall.
