Wiley, chief of the bureau of chemistry, is here for the purpose of investigating the ef fects of sulphur as a means of clari- fylng molasses. In other words, Dr. Wiley will offi cially pass upon the mooted question of the advisability on the score of public health of continuing the use of sulphur as a clarifying agent in the manufacture of molasses, one of the State's chief Industries and one that annually represents an output having a value of hundredu of thou sands of dollars. The provisions of the bill In its present form are less favorable to the manufacture of Louisiana molasses than wished for by the Sugar and molasses industries of the State and the threatened elimination of sul phur as a clarifying agent in the manufacture of molasses means chan ges in the present methods of manu facture likely to result in heavy finan cial losses to the Interests of the State and the desire to have a man ot . A PATCH OF BEANS EQUAL TO A MINE I Exacting experiments conducted under the auspices of local sugar ex perts have shown on the contrary that molasses containing an even greater percentage of sulphur than that of ordinary manufacture, Is not only not deleteriouH to health* but is postively fattening and a tissue and blood bulld- er. It remains to be seen whether the same results will be obtained in the series of tests to be made of molasses at Evergreen plantation by Dr. Wiley In the next few days. “I will make positive tests of mo lasses in which sulphur Is used as a clarifying agent,” said he, “followed by slml ar testa made with molasses In which sulphur has not been used My conclusions will not be made pub lic however, until my return to Washington, and will be made direct t0 ,^ e P retary Wilson, who will he guided by his best Judgment In mak ing them known. Hawkes has a small garden which included a “bean patch" about the size of an ordinary parlor or bedroom but which, like Jack's famous "beanstalk" yielded prodigi ously. By actual measurement the "bean patch” was 10 feet by 26 feet, or 1-121 part of an acre. From I this little plat Mrs. Hawkes sold $12 of snap beans, besides what was needed for her own table and many quarts given to neighbors. This is actual results from n little "patch” and evidences the possibilities • of Sumter county soli.
