“If Roosevelt is nominated,” Judge
O’Brien added,” and Bryan should be

AMERICUS IN NEED OF
METER INSPECTOR
How many people In, Anierlciis
know a "klllowatt hour” from a
Greek pronoun? How many are there
who can correctly read an elec trie
meter, a gas meter, or even a double
back-action, chain lightning Ainori-
cus water meter?
And yet'these startling cash com
puters are numerous here.
It Is a matter of doubt If a him-
d red citizens of tho town can correct-
ly read a gas meter; fewer still can
wrestlo with the electric wonder,
while all pass on the water bandit.
Yet Americus is run per meter, and
run to a finish.
In.nearly all things else the public
Is protected, hut not per meter. Our
food is protected by pure food laws
we have inspectors of food and
drink, Inspectors of scales and cor
rect weights, but, per meter,
game at ail seasons.
We can be shot on sight and held
uii ad libitum, and yet we are not
even allowed to protest.
Wo "settle by the meter" in ail
cases, and that’s the end of It.
Why, then, should not the city coun
cil employ a meter Inspector for I lie
protection of the public; a capable
nian who is familiar with meters of
all kinds, nnd who not only would i
tlint the meters moasured correctly,
hut Instruct people in reading them.
Surely, It would be money (the peo
ples money after all) well expended,
and f or tho people’s benefit. What
“'Ink the council about this suggest
ed protection for the public?
